More than 300 students in Santiago were arrested in massive demonstrations for free, quality education for all Chileans.  Marches took place in Santiago, Valparaiso, and other cities.  And YES, there’s a Harlem Shake video with this story.

Today’s was the first demonstration of the year, but the Education Movement has been building since 2011.  The Private Higher Education Students Movement (MESUP) says Chile's education system is profoundly unfair: The Middle Class and Up are able to access Universities among the best in Latin America; but the poor have to be content with grossly under-funded state schools.

In Santiago, cops attacked protesters with water cannons, tear gas and paintball guns:  Students marked with paint are then targeted for arrest.  Some students retaliated with rocks and of course there were the usual anarchists with petrol bombs mixed into the crowd.

Some 353 students were arrested, and right-wing Interior Minister Andrés Chadwick sided with the cops and blamed the students, whom he claimed deviated from a pre-arranged route.

But despite the seriousness of the students’ concerns and the police response, it wasn’t all scowls and arrests.
