Firefighters lost the battle as flames took mere hours to consume Rio de Janeiro's iconic National Museum of Brazil.  It is feared that not one of the 20 million artifacts and display items survived the devastating blaze.

Stunned and saddened Brazilians say it's the equivalent of a fire destroying the British Museum in the size and scope of the lost collection.  The museum contained art work, fossils of dinosaurs and a woman who lived in southern Brazil 12,000 years ago, mummies from around South America and Egypt.

Online, angry Brazilians wondered how such a thing could have happened.  They blamed governments past and present for failing to spend enough to protect the priceless and unique collection from such a disaster, or to even install a basic fire suppression system.  They pointed out that the museum's annual security budget was less than the salary of a Supreme Court justice.  Their anger grew when televised reports that the fire engines on the scene began to break down and thew water supply was interrupted.
