Europe's top nuclear lab suspended one of its scientists for a presentation that included a slide that read, "Physics invented and built by men, it's not by invitation."

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) suspended Italian physicist Alessandro Strumia from all activities at the Geneva, Switzerland-based lab "with immediate effect, pending investigation into last week's event."

During the lecture entitled "High Energy Theory and Gender", Strumia presented graphics which implied that men face discrimination in the scientific, technological and engineering branches, or so-called STEM fields.  In fact, Women are underrepresented in STEM fields and continue to be confronted with discrimination in the scientific world.  Women accounted for only 20 percent of CERN's staff members.  Strumia also claimed that female university students enroll in gender-studies classes, only to later complain about a lack of jobs in science.

CERN said Strumia didn't preview his sexist presentation for the nuclear agency, adding "that the presentation, with its attacks on individuals, was unacceptable in any professional context and was contrary to the CERN Code of Conduct", and that Strumia's statements were "highly offensive".
