A member of France’s military has been arrested for attacking one mosque and planning to shoot up another one in a plot designed to coincide with the end of Ramadan.

The 23-year-old man was stationed at an air base near the city of Lyon, and was harboring views that are “close to ideas of the extreme, radical right,” according to the Interior Ministry.

The statement said the soldier had already carried out an earlier attack and now was planning to fire on a mosque in a suburb of Lyon in eastern France.  It did not say when he was taken into custody.

France has stepped up its battle against far right groups, which have become more boisterous recently.  Just last month, France banned three far-right linked to the murder of left-wing activist 18-year old Clement Meric who died after being beaten in a busy shopping area in Paris.
