Syrian government forces have repeatedly used chemical weapons against rebels, according to a senior Israeli military official.

Brigadier General Itai Brun spoke to a security conference in Jerusalem, citing photos from the scene of one of the alleged chemical attacks.

“The reduced pupils, the foam coming out of the mouth and other additional signs provide evidence that deadly chemical weapons have been used,” Brun said, identifying Sarin Gas as the chemical agent at play.  Sarin is a deadly, colorless and odorless nerve agent used in the Tokyo Subway Terrorist Attack in March 1995.

US Secretary of State John Kerry says the Israeli government has not confirmed the information to him.  The US has said that it would not tolerate the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Last month, the Syrian government and rebels accused each other of using chemical weapons near Aleppo.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is asking NATO allies how prepared they are if indeed the Bashar al-Assad regime is using chemical weapons.  NATO has sent Patriot Missile batteries to Turkey’s southern border with Syria.

"We should also carefully and collectively consider how NATO is prepared to respond to protect its members from a Syrian threat, including any potential chemical weapons threat," Hagel said.
