Truck Rams Bastille Day Crowd In Southern France
French TV news says at least 70 people were murdered in a terrorist attack in Nice in southern France. A truck plowed into a crowd of revelers at a street festival celebrating the Bastille Day holiday.
French police were able to open fire at the truck's cabin, killing the driver - but not until after the large vehicle plunged into a crowd of people on the seafront watching a fireworks display. Witnesses and officials say it was speeding at 60 to 70 kilometers an hour, over a long stretch. At least 150 people are injured, and those who could fled in a panic. The pavement was covered in bodies and blood (warning, gruesome video, don't look if you don't want to be upset), even after helicopters began lifting the injured to hospital.
"People were shouting 'It's a terrorist attack, it's a terrorist attack', it was clear that the driver was doing it deliberately," said Maryam Violet, an Iranian journalist visiting the popular city for the holiday. "I was walking for nearly a mile and that there were dead bodies over the place."
Nice is a major tourist destination, and many of the victims were from out of town. Polish was heard spoken alongside French as first responders rushed into the scene.
"There were so many Muslim people who were victims because I could see they had scarves over their head and some were speaking Arabic. One family lost a mother and in Arabic they were saying she’s a martyr," Ms. Violet added.
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, told people to go home and stay inside. He added that guns and grenades were found in the cabin of the truck after cops neutralized the driver.
There were also unconfirmed reports of shooting separate from the volley of bullets the cops fired into the truck.
