Roberto Tapia was supposed to be looking out for the environment of the US Virgin Islands.  Federal Agents say he was using Government resources to move cocaine.

Prosecutors say federal agents watched Tapia using a boat belonging to the Virgin Islands’ Department of Planning and Natural Resources in a drug trafficking conspiracy.  They arrested Tapia on Friday, allegedly armed, in uniform, and possessing a bag containing more than seven kilograms of cocaine when arrested Friday.

At least three federal law enforcement agencies are investigating the scheme, not to mention local authorities.  US Virgin Islands Police Commissioner Rodney F. Querrard Sr. said it was a “sad day” when any law enforcer is accused of breaking the laws that they are sworn to uphold.

Tapia was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm while drug trafficking, and ordered held without bail pending a hearing on Tuesday.  If convicted, Tapia faces at least 10 years in prison.
