"America has lost," said Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on a visit to Beijing, announced that his country's "separation from the United States", which he says will be "both in military and economics, also."  Duterte has made no secret of his distaste for the US, which has criticized his maniacal "war on drugs" that has left thousands of people dead in vigilante murders or extra-judicial police killings.  US State Department spokesman John Kirby said Duterte's remarks were "inexplicably at odds with the very close relationship we have with the Filipino people as well as the government there on many different levels, not just from a security perspective".  Chinese President Xi Jinping apparently committed more than US$9 billion in low-interest loans to the Philippines.

This puts a number of things into uncertainty.  When the Philippines suffers one of its frequent disasters, usually via a killer tropical storm, it's the US that shows up with aid, manpower, and nuclear-powered Navy ships that can churn out copious amounts of fresh water to replace local supplies that are damaged.  The US is also assisting the Philippines with fighting the jihadist insurgency in the south.  And most importantly to the world, the US was counting on the Philippines cooperation in keeping shipping lanes clear from interference, after China built several military bases - even on Philippine territory - in the South China Sea.  More than US$5 Trillion in trade passes through those waters annually.

Indonesian police shot and killed an apparently Islamic state sympathizer who attacked cops with a machete.  Three officers including a local police chief were injured; the 21-year old attacker died en route to hospital.

Iraqi Special Forces are already inside one of Islamic State's last strongholds in the country, the northern city of Mosul, locating IS leaders and calling in air strikes to kill them.  Although Iraqi forces say it appears there are fewer IS fighters than believed, US Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend says the group is still a "brutal opponent" that is "using human shields in there" and is "adaptable, creative and cunning".  Separately on Thursday, the US said an American soldier had been killed in a roadside bomb attack in northern Iraq.

Across the border in Syria, Russia extended it aerial ceasefire in Aleppo into Friday, to allow the sick and wounded to be evacuated.  And in Yemen, a UN-backed truce appears to be holding after more than 18 months of fighting between the Saudi-allied government, Iran-supported rebels, and jihadists who hate them both.

Ethiopian cops are detaining more than 1,600 people in a "state of emergency" sparked by growing anti-government protests.  Earlier this week, another thousand were arrested near the capital.  People in the Oromia and Amhara regions regions are chafing under stricter government controls and broken promises of more rights.

Italian prosecutors are investigating the death of a woman who miscarried twins; 32-year old Valentina Milluzzo's doctor refused to treat her because he was a "conscientious objector" to abortion.  The hospital in Catania, Sicily denies the family's accusation that the woman's gynecologist refused to abort the ailing, nonviable fetuses in order to save the mother, saying: "As long as it's alive, I will not intervene."  A recent Italian government study found that 70 percent of gynecologists are so-called "objectors" in the predominantly Roman Catholic country.

A moron arse-clown judge in Spain has declared Catalonia's a ban on bullfighting in Catalonia "unconstitutional".  The moron arse-clown Francoist jerk face judge says that torturing and killing bulls in ridiculously one-sided and gruesome public spectacles that are rapidly posing popularity is part of Spanish "heritage" and therefore, only the central government could make decisions on it.  I could go on, but...

Moron arse-clown US Presidential candidate and fascist demagogue Donald Trump says he will accept the results of next month's election - if he wins.  At the final presiential debate the night before, the orange anus refused to guarantee that he would accept the results of the election if he lost.  This smug, coy toying with the traditional of the peaceful transfer of power that dates back to the first President George Washington is going to get someone hurt.
