World AM News Briefs For Friday, 23 December 2016
Good Morning Australia!! - The family of the suspected Berlin killer makes their plea - Obama works to short-circuit Trump - Fire eats an entire neighborhood - And more in your CareerSpot Global News Briefs:
The family of Anis Amri is urging the prime suspect in the Berlin Christmas Market Attack to turn himself in to authorities. "If my brother is listening to me, I want to tell him to surrender, even for our family. We will be relieved," said brother Abdelkader Amri in their native Tunisia. He acknowledged that his brother Anis had got into trouble in Europe earlier in the decade and came out of a three-and-a-half year jail term in Italy with a "totally different mentality" (that's right - that means that Amri did NOT come to Germany in the wave of migrants escaping war and economic disaster last year, as xenophobes suggested). Anis Amri's fingerprints were found inside the cab of the stolen black Scania truck used to ram the Breitscheidplatz market, killing twelve people and wounding 49 others. The truck's Polish proper driver was among those murdered.
A top US general is accusing Russia of using its military campaign in Syria as a "live-fire training opportunity". Lieutenant General Ben Hodges is the top US commander in Europe. Russia's "disregard for civilian casualties," he said, "is not the conduct of a nation that wants to be treated like a superpower." Russia claims to have killed 35,000 "enemy fighters" in its bombing campaigns. Meanwhile, Syria's government says the reclaiming of Aleppo is complete, and a car bomb killed 23 people in Mosul.
US pretender-elect Donald Trump said something stupid on twitter, so that means he's trying to distract from something we'll find out about in a couple of days. Tweeting from the toilet early in the morning, the orange tweaker said US must "greatly strengthen and expand" its nuclear arsenal "until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes". This idiot will take office in a month.
In stupid America, an airline passenger was escorted from the plane after telling cabinmate Ivanka Trump, "Your father is ruining the country." A day earlier, a YouTube celebrity named Adam Saleh was kicked off of a London-to-New York flight after a woman heard him speak Arabic to his mother on the telephone. But the corporate media tried to diminish Saleh's account because he posted comedy videos in the past. Wait, I thought teh Trumps had a bunch of private planes? Ahh.. See how this works? Media stunts galore.
US President Barack Obama sees how it works. That's why he just made it more difficult for Donald Trump to compile a registry of US Muslims. Mr. Obama signed an order dismantling the National Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), which was enacted after the 9/11 attacks but frozen by the president in 2011. Now, if Trump wants such a registry for whatever nefarious purpose, he will have to build it from scratch, giving civil liberties a little lead time to get their challenges in court.
Prince Charles has spoken out against the rise of anti-immigrant xenophobia. Charles told the BBC that these new political froces that are "aggressive" toward those who practice a minority faith had "deeply disturbing echoes" of the Nazi era.
Amazingly, no one died as wind-whipped fires engulfed 140 homes in Niigata in northwestern Japan. This happened in one of those extremely-tight packed neighborhoods with wood houses that are so ubiquitous in Japan. Some of the hundreds of evacuated residents heard a loud bang come from a Chinese restaurant before the wind from the Sea of Japan pushed the fire through the subdivision. The Itoigawa town fire department was not prepared for such an event, and called in the military to help put out the confligration.
