French President Emanuel Macron delivered a major, sharp, and unapologetic rebuke of Donald Trump and trumpism in front of world leaders in Paris commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I.   Three weeks after Trump infamously declared himself a nationalist, Macron declared:  "Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism," adding, "Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism.  By saying our interests first, who cares about the others, we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great and what is essential - its moral values."  It's the sort of public scolding that world leaders didn't used to do.  Trump stuck to his ten-minute scripted speech and did not respond on twitter for hours afterwards.  This appears to be a major hurdle in the Trump-Macron bromance, which in the past has had Trump calling the French leader at all hours to talk about world affairs or just to chat.

But in Poland, nationalism was the order of the day and apparently embraced by the far-right PiS government.  The so-called "March of Independence" took place in Warsaw, with more than three times as many people taking part as last year's event, which was condemned for its racist and fascist overtones.  This time, Poland's President Andrzej Duda co-opted the day by organizing an official march on the same route to mark the anniversary of the re-establishment of the country’s independence in 1918.  There were warnings not to display racist signs, but they were seen anyway and the cops didn't act.  And when Duda addressed the crowd, Polish troops and cops stood alongside members of the fascist group National-Radical Camp (ONR) and their far-right pals visiting from other countries.

Labor has opened a commanding 10-point lead over the Morrison government in the latest Newspoll survey published by the Australian last night.  Asked to choose between the two major parties if the election were held today, Aussies responding to the survey picked Labor 55 percent to 45 percent.  Prime Minister Scott Morrison still leaders Bill Shorten as the preferred PM, but Scott's approval rating is down while his disapproval is up since the last poll.

A 50-year old Queensland woman is expected in court today after being arrested in the contamination of fresh strawberries with needles.  Prosecutors charged My Ut Trinh, also known as "Judy", with seven counts of contamination.  The ABC is reporting that this is connected to one of the original cases involving the company Berry Licious.  The contamination scare began in southern QLD in September but spread to other areas and involved other brands of berries as well.

The death toll in the California wildfires jumped to 25 lives lost and there are expectations it will grow a lot worse.  Some of the dead were incinerated and family members of the more than 100 missing people are being asked to provide DNA samples to compare to the remains, some of which are nothing more than bones and fragments.  The hot dry wind from Nevada is picking up again making things much worse for firefighters.  The deadly Camp Fire which destroyed the town of Paradise, California in the north is about 20 percent contained and is threatening two more populated areas.  The Woolsey Fire which routed a bunch of Hollywood celebrities from their homes in Malibu is only 5 percent contained.

At least eleven people are dead in a mudslide outside Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.  Heavy rain loosened the hills above the town of Niteroi, and several people died when a large boulder rolled on top of six houses in the Boa Esperanca neighborhood.

A spokesman claims that Gabon's President Ali Bongo is recovering from a serious illness, ending weeks of speculation about the missing leader's condition.  After weeks out of the public eye, it turns out that he's been in hospital in Saudi Arabia.  Rumors involve the 59-year old Mr. Ali suffering a stroke, but the government is not confirming that.
