All 168 people on board a Boeing 737-800 passenger plane survived when it slid off the runway and down a muddy cliff towards the Black Sea at the Turkish resort city of Trabzon.

"It's a miracle we escaped," said Yuksel Gordu, a passenger on Pegasus Airlines Pegasus Airlines Flight PC8622, which had just arrived from Ankara.  "We could have burned, exploded, flown into the sea."


"We swerved all of a sudden," said another passenger Fatma Gordu to the Dogan News Agency.  "The front of the plane crashed and the back was in the air.  Everyone panicked."  However, all 162 passengers and six crew members were able to get out through the emergency exits and slog it up the cliff.  Authorities promise a thorough investigation.

An oil tanker that's been burning off the coast of Shanghai, China has exploded, broken up, and sank. 

Chinese authorities are worried because the MV Sanchi was carrying a toxic petroleum product:  "The ship sinking is the worst situation," said Ma Jun of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs to the state-run Global Times, "The condensate oil - a kind of ultra light oil on Sanchi - is different than other types of crude oil and is poisonous to marine life." 


"Any marine life that encounters it could be killed," said Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University.  "Therefore, it is important to assess how much oil leaked into the sea to determine how serious the marine ecology might be impacted."  The Sanchi from Iran collided with another freighter on 6 January.  The second ship and its crew were largely okay, but only three bodies of the 32 crew members were recovered from the burning Sanchi.

Turkey is reportedly angry with the US over plans to train 30,000 Syrian rebel personnel to effectively serve as a border guard along the Turkish frontier.  Part of the area controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern and eastern Syria are dominated by the Kurdish YPG, which Ankara considers to be an extension of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) - a group that has waged a three decade insurgency in Turkey.  "It is absolutely not possible for this to be accepted," said Ibrahim Kalin, spokesman for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

One person is dead and scores are wounded after an earthquake rocked Peru's southwestern Pacific Coast.  There is widespread infrastructure damage from the magnitude 7.1 temblor, including buildings, roads, and communications.

The French dairy giant Lactalis is recalling more than 12 million boxes of powdered baby milk in 83 countries because of Salmonella.  Australia, the US, and the UK are not affected.  Several lawsuits have been filed by parents of kids who fell ill since the bacteria was discovered in a Lactalis plant in December.  The firm's chief insists there as no effort to cover-up the outbreak.

Eight people died in a heating boiler explosion at a community center in Vila Nova da Rainha in northern Portugal, where townspeople had gathered to play cards and watch football on TV.
