US President Barack Obama spoke with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Peru, seeking to reassure Malcolm that the relationship between their two countries "transcends party politics". The "election" of Donald Trump has set off alarms in capitals around the world as allies and partners watch the orange clown obsessing over impersonations on a TV comedy show or a cool reception for his homophobic running mate Mike Pence at a Broadway play instead of preparing for the most powerful office in the world. Obama said he would do everything he can to ensure "continuity" in their relationship with the Trump administration. The PM said it was a "great moment but a sad moment" to be meeting with Mr. Obama for the last time in his presidency.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed she will run for a fourth term. Ms. Merkel has steered Germany through numerous crises since first taking office in 2005, and acknowledges this will be her toughest election because of the rise of of the far right wing in global politics.
Belgium will honor slain British MP Jo Cox in a list of 26 "illustrious women" who will have public places named after them in Brussels. Ms. Cox was viciously murdered by a Brexit campaigner in her home district earlier this year. The secretary-general of the European Women's Lobby says Jo Cox was "an extraordinary, brilliant and fearless feminist, motivated by a passion for women's rights and social justice, and supported by the belief that we can and must struggle for a safer, fairer and more secure world."
At least 115 people were killed in a train wreck in northern India. The express train was 65 kilometers outside the city of Kanpur near Purwa village when it derailed, trapping hundreds of people underneath toppled and twisted rail cars. It's India's worst railroad disaster since 2010.
Four Rio de Janeiro police officers are dead in the after their chopper was shot down, allegedly by a criminal gang in the "City of God" favela. Witnesses (or maybe participants) appear to have caught the moments around the crash on mobile video, although these have yet to be authenticated. Cops and the military were conducting anti-drug and anti-gang raids throughout the favela over the weekend, and the chopper was helping with aerial surveillence.
South Korean prosecutors allege President Park Geun-hye was an accomplice in the corruption scandal bogging down her administration. They filed charges against Park's close friend Choi Soon-sil and former presidential aide An Chong-bum in an influence peddling scheme. Hundreds of thousands of people fill Seoul's streets regularly calling for her resignation.
