Police in Jacksonville, Florida have responded to a mass shooting at a videogame tournament at the Jacksonville Landing mall on the riverfront.  Local media had reported that four people were dead and eleven are wounded, and police say the suspect is one of the dead.  An unverified video circulating on social media purports to contain the live stream from the inside of the venue, showing the video game in progress but containing the audio of shots being fired while horrified young people scream.

And now..

US Senator John McCain died of brain cancer, a day after his family announced he had stopped taking treatments for the disease.  He's being remember as a tenacious and principled conservative politician, and for his heroism as a US Navy pilot who had been shot down and taken captive by the North Vietnamese military from 1967 to 1973; he endured terrible injuries and unspeakable torture, and yet refused an out-of-turn release as long as other Americans were being held.  He served in the House of Representatives and the US Senate, and ran for President twice.

As happens when an elder politician dies, people are remembering the high points and certainly many are recalling that he was a man of his word.  His true legacy is somewhat mixed:  McCain was certainly capable of working across the aisle to do good, especially when it came to the troops and veterans.  He refused to "go racist", as many had privately urged him to do during his 2008 presidential bid against the eventual winner Barack Obama.  But he also advocated for US military intervention in many situations that no US president felt was appropriate, and wanted increase involvement in existing conflicts.  He actively opposed the creation of a holiday honoring civil rights figure Martin Luther King, a decision he would later regret.

McCain would become a critic of Donald Trump, providing the decisive vote that prevented Trump from repealing the Affordable Care Act, known as "Obamacare".  McCain also refused to resign his senate seat while battling cancer so that the seat would not be given to an appointee favorable to Trump.  He also planned his own funeral in which four past presidents will attend or speak, but in which the current White House occupant is persona non grata.

Anyway..

Ex-Foreign Minister Julie Bishop tweeted, "Vale John McCain, An American hero who dedicated his life to his country through 60 years of service in US military and Congress.  A true friend of Australia."  But Australian pols are hailing Ms. Bishop, who announced she is stepping down as the Foreign Minister.  Former PM Malcolm Turnbull called her "Australia's finest Foreign Minister", while Labor's Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman Penny Wong praised Bishop "for her trailblazing role as the first Australian woman" to be foreign affairs minister.  Julie Bishop will stay on as an MP.  Replacing her as Foreign Minister is Marise Payne.  Peter Dutton will reportedly return as Home Affairs Minister, but Immigration has been stripped out of that portfolio and handed to David Coleman.  Prime Minister Scott Morrison's first overseas visit will be to Indonesia.

Pope Francis wrapped up his visit to Ireland by begging for forgiveness for Roman Catholic officials who "kept quiet" about the "repugnant crimes" of clerical child sex abuse.  But the Vatican has not responded to allegations from its former ambassador to Washington who claimed he warned Pope Francis about sex abuse allegations against prominent US Cardinal Theodore McCarrick five years before Francis accepted his resignation last month.  The allegations were detailed in an 11-page letter written by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano which was published simultaneously in conservative Catholic websites in the US.  Vigano offered no proof to back up his claim.

Israel will on Monday reopen the country's main personnel crossing with the Gaza Strip following a week of relative calm along the border.  Egypt had been working with Israel and Hamas to end the current trouble, which began five months ago with a series of protests demanding that Palestinians be allowed to return to their ancestral lands in southern Israel.  168 Palestinians were killed in clashes, as was one Israeli Defense Force soldier.

Greek police say a burglar picked a window too high:  A 43-year-old man broke into a sixth-storey window at a warehouse in Thessaloniki, stole a drill, and climbed back out.  But he slipped and fell several meters to a first floor awning and died, his burglar tools falling beside him.

Beloved US playwright Neil Simon is dead at age 91.  He's known for comedies documenting the sunny side of the mid-20th century New York experience, especially "Barefoot in the Park", "The Odd Couple", and "Plaza Suite".  In 1991 he won the Pulitzer Prize For Drama with Lost in Yonkers.  Robert Redford once said, "Some say he's the most successful playwright since Shakespeare."
