Good Morning, Australia! – Another Aussie is identified apparently fighting alongside Islamic State – A baby survives a killer car wreck – A sportswear company apologizes for the blazingly stupid sexist message on soccer jerseys – And a lot more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:
A Western youth pictured holding a weapon and sitting alongside members of Islamic state is identified as an 18-year old from Cragieburn in Melbourne’s northern suburbs – and not “Britain’s White Jihadi”, as described by the UK’s tabloid media last year. Fairfax Media reports the boy named Jake was a “Maths whiz, who attended Craigieburn Secondary College's CEAP Excel accelerated learning program”. But he dropped out, converted to radical Islam, and last year flew off to join Islamic State. This revelation comes after the Customs Counter Terrorism Unit stopped two teens at Sydney Airport, preventing them from flying to Middle East war zones.
Niger and Chad have launched a major ground and air offensive against Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria. Those two nations along with Cameroon have been “helping” Nigeria with the insurgency that has frequency spilled over the borders from Borne State. The multinational forces have claimed big gains against Boko Haram in recent weeks, whereas Nigerian officials seemed to have been bewildered and keeping their forces on the back foot for six years. Over the weekend, Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau released an audio message pledging allegiance to Islamic State; IS hasn’t really acknowledged it, yet.
A Moscow court has charged two Chechen men in the murder of Russian opposition activist Boris Nemtsov. Officials say one of the defendants already admitted involved in the assassination near the Kremlin on 27 February, and three more men are being detained. There’s no indication of what their motive might have been. Opposition activists insist the Kremlin was involved in Nemtsov’s murder, to intimidate them during a time of mounting economic problems and Russian involvement in east Ukraine.
One year after the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, a new report says the battery for the locator beacon on the flight data recorders had expired long before the plane disappeared with 239 passengers and crew on board. But it shed no further light on what might have happened to it. Despite a massive search, not one piece of debris has ever been found.
An 18-month old baby survived 14-hours in a partially submerged car, because she as strapped into her child seat above the water line. This happened on the Spanish Fork River in the American western state of Utah, about 60 kilometers south of Salt Lake City. The girl’s 25-year old mother didn’t survive. The family had last heard from the mother when she set off from her family’s home on Friday night; an angler found the car tipped over in the river a day later. The baby is in a critical condition in hospital.
Peru has recalled its ambassador to Chile amid a military spying dispute. Chile denies engaging in any spying, at home or abroad, but is conducting an internal investigation. Peru claims it has evidence that Chile tried to bribe three Naval members to pass on confidential information. “Until we get an explanation on the incident, we will withdraw our ambassador to Chile,” said Peruvian Prime Minister Ana Jara.
An Indonesian clothing company’s defense of its sexist laundry tag is almost as bad as the tag itself. Salvo Sports put the offensive tag on Jerseys made for the Pusamania Borneo Soccer Team: “Washing instructions: Give this shirt to a woman. It’s her job”. Okay, that’s beyond idiotic. After much criticism that spread after it hit social media, Salvo Sports lamely tweeted, “The message is simply, instead of washing it in the wrong way, you might as well give it to a lady because they are more capable,” and that Salvo just wants the guys to learn how to do the laundry because women know how to do laundry better. Oh, and the company did this on International Women’s Day. Okay.. Salvo Sports: Stop digging. The hole is deep enough.
Also on International Women’s Day, Kremlin-backed rebels hold a beauty pageant, because I don’t get enough migraines while looking through this screwed-up world’s news. Here’s a good run through of what the observance is really all about.
Uhm.. Crikey?
