The Federal Opposition and Greens are calling for changes to the government’s draconian treatment of immigrants in light of the damning report from the Human Rights Commission called “The Forgotten Children”. It details the abuse suffered by more than 1,100 children in the detention system, and explores the physical and psychological effects. “There are 105 children, I note on suicide watch, 10 of those children under the age of 10,” said Greens spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young.
More than 300 migrants are believed dead in the Mediterranean Sea after trying to cross from North Africa in extremely rough seas. Survivors were rescued from two of four poorly-equipped and grossly overcrowded dinghies that human traffickers sent north from lawless Libya, and brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which has turned from a quiet fishing community into a humanitarian lifeline for migrants in mortal danger. Amnesty International slammed EU countries for “burying their heads in the sand while hundreds keep dying at sea” on its southern frontier.
While you were sleeping, the former captain of the Costa Concordia has been found guilty of 32 counts of manslaughter. Francesco Schettino denied charges he steered the ship too close to the Island of Giglio in January 2012, where it overturned after hitting some rocks. The court sentenced him to 16-year in prison; prosecutors wanted him to serve 26.
South Korea sentenced a former coast guard captain to four years in prison for professional negligence during the rescue operation around the Sewol ferry last April. Prosecutors said Kim Kyung-il delayed efforts to rescue passengers, and falsely claimed to have broadcast an evacuation order through loudspeakers. More than 300 passengers drowned, many of them high school students.
A gunman murdered three promising university students execution-style, in a dispute over a parking space – and several details indicate a possible hate crime. This happened (where else) in gun crazy America, at a condo near the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The victims are 23-year old Deah Shaddy Barakat, his 21-year old wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, and her 19-year old sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. The two women wore traditional Muslim headscarves and the couple frequently clashed with their ugly neighbor, gun-nut and self-declared “anti-theist” Craig Stephen Hicks, aged 46. The father of the women says they complained of having a “hateful neighbor” who “hates us for what we are and how we look”. Authorities charged Hicks with three counts of first-degree murder, and will investigate the hate crime angle.
Myanmar’s Prime Minister withdrew temporary voting rights for the countries more than one million Rohingya Muslims, who live in Myanmar but are not considered to be citizens. This follows massive protests by Buddhist nationalists (who apparently don’t know anything about Buddhism) against special IDs for voting called “White Cards” or “White Papers” designed to give Muslims the right to vote. The UN has been pressuring Myanmar to end abusive treatment of the Rohingya, and last year passed a resolution urging Myanmar to give access to citizenship for the Rohingya, many of whom are classed as stateless.
A Toucan will get a new upper beak, thanks to advances in 3D printing. Costa Rica’s Environmental Ministry rescued the exotic bird that was apparently attacked by wayward teenagers last month, and circulated photos of it on social media. “Grecia” lost most of his upper beak to the jerks, and that sparked outrage in the Central American nation. hree Costa Rican tech companies and San Jose’s Veritas University are all participating in the development of a prototype prosthetic beak. “Grecia” can’t feed himself without a beak. They’re keeping him alive by mashing up his food for him. And even after he gets his new schnozz, he’ll have to stay in captivity.
