An Australian diplomat to the United Nations is dead after falling from his seventh-storey balcony in New York City.  30-year old Julian Simpson had apparently been drinking with friends to celebrate the overwhelming "yes" vote on the postal referendum on legalizing Gay Marriage, and had engaged in some horseplay.  Police determined he had "sat on the balcony railing and lost his balance and fell off," according to an NYPD spokesperson who added, "No criminality is suspected at this time and the investigation is ongoing."

Despite saying it was "not a military takeover", Zimbabwe's army has pretty much taken control of the country.  Troops moved in on the state broadcaster and military vehicles control strategic points in the capital Harare.  Major General Sibusiso Moyo went on TV and said the military was targeting "criminals" surrounding 93-year old dictator Robert Mugabe, who has run the country's politics since independence in 1980, and that the Mugabe family is "safe and sound and their security is guaranteed".  Other sources describe it more like house arrest.  Mugabe angered the military by sacking the vice president and passing over the top general in the line of succession in favor of his mercurial 50-year old wife Grace Mugabe.

The country's Supreme Court said the treatment of Naomi Coleman, from Coventry, was "scandalous and horrifying" and ruled her rights had been violated.  Not only was there no legal basis for her arrest, but authorities demanded bribes from her and made degrading and threatening sexual comments.  Ms. Coleman has visited many Buddhist countries in Asia, but doubts she'll return to Sri Lanka.
