Unfortunately, the top story is the boorish behavior of the orange clown in the White House.  The White House is denying the accusations of a Gold Star family who said the Donald Trump disrespected their fallen American Soldier killed two weeks ago in a mysterious battle in Niger; disrespected the family; and told them that the soldier "knew what he signed up for".  Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, a Florida Democrat, said that Trump did not use or even seem to know the name of Sgt. La David Johnson, nor the family members during his "condolence call".  Donald Trump angrily denied the Congresswoman's account as "fabricated", and claimed he had "proof" of his good behavior; but Sgt. Johnson's mother backed up Ms. Wilson.

At the very least, Trump has extraordinarily failed a simple test:  The call to the Johnson family was supposed to express the nation's condolences; instead, and as with everything that goes wrong in this malignant and toxic White House, it was all about Trump.  At the end of the day, the foul up shed no light on why Sgt. Johnson and three other US troops were killed in a terrorist ambush in Niger, what they were doing there, or what was the US mission in the African nation.  Senator John McCain later said the Senate Armed Services Committee was not getting the information it sought on the mission in Niger, and when asked if the White House was being helpful, he replied:  "No."

Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney alleged she had for years been molested by USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted in a childporn case earlier this year and is accused of abusing dozens of women as young as 12 in the athletic program.  In Ms. Maroney's case, she said it stated when she was just 13 years old.  The Gold Medalist said she was inspired to come forward by the social media hashtag "#metoo", which grew out of the Harvey Weinstein scandal in Hollywood to illustrate just how many women have been subjected to sex harassment and abuse.  "People should know this is not just happening in Hollywood," Maroney said, "Wherever there is a position of power, there seems to be a potential for abuse."  Maroney is famous for her performance on the mat as well as the famous "McKayla is not impressed" meme from 2012.

Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled his "new era" of internationalist outreach in his address before the national Communist Party's conference in Beijing.  Promising that "socialism with Chinese characteristics" shows China had now "become a great power in the world", and there is "a new choice for other countries" looking for investment partners - signalling a challenge to the West.  "It is time for us to take center stage in the world and to make a greater contribution to humankind," Mr. Xi said.

The UN says it is ready to go into Raqqa, Syria after Kurdish YPG with international Leftist volunteers and other US-backed groups drove out the so-called Islamic State.  There are few if any civilians left in the city after three years of IS mismanagement and atrocities, and it is unlikely residents will be allowed back in to the war-torn hellscape any time soon.  The aid group Save the Children is warning the humanitarian crisis in northeastern Syria was "rapidly escalating", with refugee camps "bursting at the seams".

Iraq says troops have retaken the oil-rich Kirkuk province and Kurdish Peshmerga forces have fallen back to behind the 2014 lines.  There is division within the Kurds, with some saying that this month's independence referendum which prompted the Iraqi crackdown never should have happened, and rival groups are blaming each other for losing Kirkuk.  Iraqi leader Haider al-Abadi declared the referendum moot and called for dialogue with the Kurdistan Regional Government to discuss a regional partnership based on the Iraqi constitution.

Spain has reiterated its threat to suspend Catalonian autonomy if Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont doesn't give up his independence drive by Thursday.  "All I ask of Mr. Puigdemont is that he acts sensibly," said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy before Parliament, "To put the interest of all citizens first."  Measures taken under Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution could range from Madrid taking control of Catalan regional police and finances, to calling a regional snap election.  Meanwhile, people have protested the detention of two leader of the separatist movement.  Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart are being investigated for sedition.
