Good Morning Australia!! - There's no such thing as a free lunch (or USB stick) - Kerry tries to save the broken cease fire in Syria - Rome's mayor doesn't think the olympics are worth the trouble - And more in your CareerSpot Global News Briefs:

Police are warning people not to try and use USB memory sticks that were inserted into mail boxes (real ones, not email) in Pakenham, Victoria.  The devices are "extremely harmful", and contain malware that would connect your computer to fraudulent media-streaming service offers, as well as other computer cooties and crapola.  Why would anyone fall for this?  Well, because people want something for nothing.  A University of Illinois experiment found that 45 to 98 percent of those who foundstrange, unclaimed USB sticks dropped around campus would go ahead and stick the filthy, nasty things in their computers.

Rome is about to drop its bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, with the ancient city's mayor claiming it would "irresponsible" to be a candidate.  The Roma 2024 committee said it is "profoundly surprised and disappointed" over the opposition of Mayor Virginia Raggi of the Five Star party which rejects traditional economics and politics.  "This city is unlivable," Mayor Raggi said, pointing out the city needs to focus on restoring broken services such as basic trash collection.  Supporters claim the Olympics would bring jobs to the city, but detractors point to dilapidated, unused Olympic facilities around the world built with public money that left municipalities in debt.

A judge in Brazil ordered former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to stand trial on corruption and money laundering charges over an alleged scheme at the state oil company, Petrobras.  Lula denies any wrongdoing, and says the charges are politically motivated to prevent him for running for president again in 2018.  Lula is one of Brazil's most popular leaders who was president between 2003 and 2011 doing all of the things conservatives hate:  Providing health care, education, and other services to the poorest citizens; and reducing the extreme poverty rate.  Conservatives have just seized control of the government by impeaching his successor Dilma Rousseff over a minor accounting error, and it looks like they're trying to disqualify Lula as well.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is trying to salvage the Syrian Civil War cease-fire by proposing that no military planes be allowed to fly "in order to de-escalate the situation and give a chance for humanitarian assistance to flow unimpeded".  This follows two grievous incidents:  An air strike blamed on Russian jets killed 20 people in an aid convoy, forcing the suspension of aid attempts; and the US-directed air strike involving Aussie air power that was to target Islamic State forces, but wound up killing scores of Syrian soldiers battling the Islamists.  The six and a half year old Syrian Civil war has displaced millions of people, creating Europe's refugee crisis, as well as killed between 300,000 and 500,000 - if only international monitoring sources could agree.

It's not immediately clear whose aircraft killed four medics in an airstrike on the rebel-held town of Khan Touman in northern Syria.  The International Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations said planes started circling once the medics to deal with an earlier bomb blast.  The attack took out two nurses and two ambulance drivers, while a third nurse remains in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, a Saudi airstrike killed eleven people in the "other" proxy war in the Arab world, in Yemen.  The Saudis targeted Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and wound up killing a bunch of women and children instead.

The European Union Parliament condemned Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte's insane "war on drugs" that has killed more than 3,000 people since he took office on 30 June.  Duterte responded with an expletive filled rant and flipping the middle finger at Europe, which he accused of being "hypocritical" former colonial powers out to atone for their own sins.  No, he didn't explain what one has to do with the other.
