Good Morning Australia!! - Trump attacks the rights of trans people, for no apparent reason other than to save his own arse - Opposition to Trump comes from unexpected and decided right-wing quarters - Is Brazilian film history repeating itself? - And more in your CareerSpot Global News Briefs:

Because the scumbag piece of crap thrives on chaos, Donald Trump tweeted that he will ban transgender people from serving in the US military.  This comes just a year after President Barack Obama ended the military's ban, and in that year there has been absolutely no evidence of any "disruption" in US military readiness caused by openly transgender troops.  Trump's pretend rationale is, of course, based in ugly lies.  Social conservatives claimed the military would be burdened the costs of gender transition surgery and health care - in fact, a 2016 Rand Corporation study found that transgender healthcare would add a negligible US$8.4 Million onto the bloated, insane US$580.3 BILLION budget.

It wasn't even a month ago that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis gave the military six months to conduct a review to determine if allowing transgender individuals to enlist in the armed services impacted the "readiness or lethality" of the force (hint, it hasn't).  There is no indication that Trump consulted with mattis, nor any member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  The Pentagon has not been briefed has has referred questions to the White House.  Not only has Donald Trump stabbed yet another high ranking cabinet secretary in the back, but the White House has not bothered to explain about when Trump's ban goes into place, nor what would happen to as many as 6,000 openly transgender troops currently serving their country - for a lousy salary - in the US military.

Although there was limited support for Trump's flagrantly bigoted tweets from faux-religious conservatives, some of the most important criticism came from prominent conservatives.  "Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving," said Sen. John McCain, "And should be treated as the patriots they are."  Iowa Senator and Iraq war veteran Joni Ernst said, "Americans who are qualified and can meet the standards to serve in the military should be afforded that opportunity."  Deep South red state conservative Sen. Richard Shelby insisted the military is "a big tent for people who want to serve", adding that military service is voluntary.  Even Sen. Orrin Hatch - possibly the highest-ranking Mormon in US politics - said, "I don't think we should be discriminating against anyone.  Transgender people are people, and deserve the best we can do for them."

So why did the orange scumbag pull this stunt now?  Over twitter?  Without consulting any experts?  To change the subject, of course, from the investigation into Russian influence over his 2016 presidential campaign.  This is a guy roaming the halls of the White House with fewer and fewer allies.

Anyway..

Greek police arrested a Russian national suspected of laundering billions of dollars through the crypto-currency Bitcoin.  They're now preparing to extradite 38-year-old Alexander Vinnik from Thessaloniki to the US to face charges.

Canada has revoked the citizenship of a former nazi soldier for the fourth time.  To get Canadian citizenship in 1954, Helmut Oberlander lied about his membership in a nazi military unit that killed two million people, including many of the Jews murdered in the Holocaust.  Canada tried three previous times to revoke the liar's citizenship and send him back to Germany, but he beat the charges each time.  "We are determined to deny safe haven in Canada to war criminals and persons believed to have committed or been complicit in war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide," said Citizenship Canada's Lisa Filipps.  It's never too late to exact justice, especially on nazi scum!

Brazil police say an actor who played a small-time gang member in the 2002 Oscar-nominated film "City of God" has grown up to be one of the worst drug dealers in the favelas.  Known on the streets as "Ivan the Terrible", 34-year old Ivan da Silva Martins is wanted for shooting a police officer in Rio de Janeiro's "Vidigal" shantytown.  "City of God" - like 1980's "Pixote" before it - exposed the violence and despair of the favelas using local youth as actors, to widespread acclaim on the international film circuit.  And "Pixote's" star was killed in a confrontation with Sao Paulo police shortly after the film was released.
