Baltimore Police more or less successfully enforced a 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM curfew put in place to tamp down civil unrest over the death of a young African American man after being arrested.  The death of Freddie Gray was the latest in a string of high-profile cases of black men getting killed by white cops.  Schools were back in session on Wednesday.  Now, community activists can get back to pressuring police to explain why Gray was arrested, and why his spine was severed so badly that it killed him.

The Baltimore Orioles hosted the Chicago White Sox in a first for Major League Baseball – they played in an empty stadium.  Closed-door games have occurred in Europe with soccer teams, but this appears to be the first time it was tried in America.  The unrest in Baltimore has meant the home team has had to postpone two games.

An unmanned Russian cargo spacecraft is spinning out of control and will likely plummet back to earth and partially burn up in the atmosphere.  Officials say the chance of hitting a populated area is small.  Russia launched the Progress M-27M on Tuesday from Kazakhstan, but lost contact with it soon afterward.  It was carrying food and supplies for the International Space Station but docking will be impossible.

That cargo ship seized by Iran in the Straits of Hormuz and diverted to an Iranian island is apparently caught up in a debt dispute.  An Iranian company claims it is owed by the Dutch company that staffs and operates the MV Maersk Tigris.  The incident was initially reported (mostly by Murdoch’s media) as a potential Iranian assault against US interests, but there were no Americans on the boat.  The US Sent a Navy ship to the region to monitor the situation.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe became the first Japanese leader to address a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday.  Abe quoted the Carol King song “You’ve Got A Friend” to describe Tokyo’s relationship with Washington.  He declared his country to be an emerging power in global security in face of terrorism and a rising China.  Abe also acknowledged the suffering of Asian peoples from its wartime behavior.  But he stopped short of issuing his own apology, and instead upheld statements made by his predecessors.

The worst thing about working for Kim Jong-un is the job security.  The North Korean leader has ordered the executions of 15 people this year, including some top officials.  South Korean intelligence told a hearing in Seoul that this list includes members of an orchestra and a forestry minister who complained about Kim’s forestation plan.  The information was not confirmed and North Korea usually doesn’t comment about such things.

Jack Ely, the lead singer of the 1960s garage band The Kingsmen is dead at age 71.  Ely and his band will always be known for their inscrutable version of the hit song “Louie Louie”, once investigated by the FBI over fears the lyrics might be obscene.  Agents concluded the song was “unintelligible at any speed”.  Ely said that’s because he had to shout it over the guitars and drums.  Of course, all the Feds had to do was to listen to the original version recorded by Richard Berry and the Pharoahs in 1957, but then that would have made sense.
