British Prime Minister Theresa May has triggered the Brexit, sending formal letters to the European Union requesting negotiations to remove the UK from the continental economic union.  The two sides now have two years to complete the process.  As French President Francois Hollande said, the Brexit was "sentimentally painful" for Europe but would be "economically painful" for Britain:  The UK will be withdrawing to become the EU's competitor, and common sense would dictate that there is no way on earth that the Europeans are going to make it easy on London.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has already rejected a key demand in UK PM May's Brexit letter:  Merkel says Britain cannot negotiate its future diplomatic relationship with Europe concurrently with the Brexit talks.  "The negotiations must first clarify how we will disentangle our interlinked relationship," said the German leader in Berlin, "Only when this question is dealt with can we - hopefully soon after - begin talking about our future relationship."  The remaining 27 states of the EU and its institution have long maintained that three things must be established prior to a new relationship:  The rights of EU citizens in the UK; the rights of Britons on the continent; and the size of Britain's exit bill.

European leaders are criticizing US fascist demagogue Donald Trump's rollback of former President Barack Obama's measures to combat climate change.  Trump's executive order basically hands the keys to the store over to oil and coal interests.  "It remains to be seen by which other means the United States intends to meet its commitments under the Paris agreement," said EU climate action commissioner Miguel Arias Canete.  "We will stand by Paris, we will defend Paris, and we will implement Paris," he added.  Trump's attack on the environment faces years of bureaucratic wrangling and legal challenges - A coalition of 23 US states, cities, and counties have already announced plans to resist.

Searchers in Indonesia have found a missing farmer.. inside a giant python.  25-year old Akbar disappeared on Sunday; villagers in Salubiro, on the eastern island of Sulawesi, soon noticed the seven-meter snake slithering along awkwardly with a giant bulge in the middle.  "We were immediately suspicious that the snake had swallowed Akbar because around the site we found palm fruit, his harvesting tool, and a boot," said a local official.  Python attacks on humans are exceedingly rare, although there was that time in 2013 when a snake strangled a hotel security guard.

China is acknowledging it has detained a Taiwanese NGO worker and human rights activist on suspicion of endangering national security.  Lee Ming-cheh is a volunteer for the Taiwan Association for Human Rights; he disappeared on 19 March after crossing over from the semi-autonomous city of Macau.  Beijing "suspects" Lee of endangering national security.  This comes amid worsening relations between China and Taipei, which Beijing considers to be a rogue province.

Despite a horrifying scene at Peru's Jauja airport in the Andes, all 141 passengers and crew on board managed to get off of a passenger jet that caught fire.

The US military has opened a formal investigation into reports its bombs may have killed as many as 200 innocent civilians in Mosul, Iraq this month.  The Pentagon has already admitted that a 17 March airstrike in western Mosul was close to the location of three houses that were leveled with dozens of civilians inside.  US Central Command chief General Joseph Votel told congress there has been no change in policy in Iraq and Syria since Donald Trump occupied the Oval Office.  Meanwhile, Iraqi forces taking Mosul back from the so-called Islamic State are closing in on the Great Mosque of al-Nuri, where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed the establishment of a "caliphate" in 2014.

South African President Jacob Zuma did not attend the funeral of a prominent African National Congress activist because he was banned by the man's family.  Ahmed Kathrada died last week at age 87; he was a comrade of the late ANC leader and father of modern South African Nelson Mandela.  But Kathrada, like much of the old guard, was disgusted by the corruption and incompetence of the Zuma government and last year had called for Zuma to step down.  Funeral attendees applauded when former President Kgalema Motlanthe repeated Mr. Kathrada's call.

The world's stupidest judge is now in Mexico.  Judge Anuar Gonzalez Hemadi cleared an affluent defendant in a sexual assault case because he didn't enjoy it.  Defendant Diego Cruz Alonso and three friends - all sons of wealthy businessmen or politicians - forced their female classmate into the back of  Mercedes after a party in 2015 when the victim was just 17-years old and allegedly molested her.  Judge Gonzalez said the conduct amounted to "incidental rubbing" of the victim's breast and genitals and was without "lascivious intent".  The young woman's father said the judge's arguments were "abominable", and the ruling should not be allowed to stand.  The case is causing friction in Mexico, being called as a prime example of the impunity of Mexico's powerful elite.  Last week, a male Italian judge tossed sex assault cause because the victim didn't scream loud enough.
