China announced its will slap its own tariffs on incoming US goods, five to 25 percent onto a wide array of 5,000 imports.  This is retaliation for Donald Trump's trade tariffs last week.  Wall Street reacted with disapproval for Trump's trade war, sending the Dow Jones plunging more than 610 points for its second worst loss of the year.  Trump, for some reason, said there's "no reason" for US consumers to pay the tariffs out of their own pocket, but that's is the reality of what will happen:  Big business will pass on the additional costs of the tariffs onto the consumer, and of course it will bleed out from US borders onto its allies.

The turmoil sent Uber stock sinking another eleven percent, which makes two consecutive days of losses in Uber's first two days as a publicly traded company.  Valued at US$45 per share in its IPO last week, Uber closed at around $37 on Monday.  Uber's misfortunes wiped about US$20 Billion off of its market cap in two days.

Hollywood legend Doris Day is dead at age 97 at her home in Carmel, California.  In the 1940s and '50s, she starred in musicals and lighter fare, often playing the sunny, blond "all American girl next door" (even well into her 40s), and settling into a series of highly successful romantic comedies - most notably with Rock Hudson and later with James Garner.  Her personal life was far more complicated;  after learning her late husband and manager had pretty much blown all of her money, she starred in a highly successful TV sit-com for five years before getting out of Hollywood, surfacing occasionally to speak for AIDS awareness and animal rights.

An American breaking the record for the deepest sea dive found something alarming - a plastic bag and some candy wrappers.  It shows that human generated plastic waste has not spread to the deepest and most remote reaches of the world, including 11 kilometers beneath sea level in the Mariana Trench.  Victor Vescovo and his team completed the deep dive on 1 May, but the details on the mission were released on Monday in the US.

Swedish prosecutors have reopened the investigation into rape allegations against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.  He denies the allegations, which were reanimated by lawyers of the women who first filed them in 2010.  Assange claimed the accusation was just a cover to get him arrested so he could be extradited to the US to face charges related to leaking military secrets, and he sought shelter inside Ecuador's embassy on London for seven years to avoid arrest - Ecuador eventually grew sick of its house guest and allowed London cops to carry him out a few weeks ago... so, he's now facing problems in both countries.

Sudan prosecutors have charged ousted president Omar Bashir in the deaths of protesters against his regime.  Huge, relentless street protests prompted the military to end Bashir's two decade rule last month.  Investigators are also looking into other allegations against Bashir, including terror financing and money laundering.
