There's a lot of stupid America news...

An Uber autonomous vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, prompting the company to suspend tests of self-driving cars in all states.  The US National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) is also investigating the fatality.  This happened on Sunday night in Tempe:  A 49-year old woman identified as Elaine Herzeberg crossed a street, but not at the crosswalk.  The car that struck her did have a real human behind wheel as it navigated streets in autonomous mode.  "We're thinking of the victim's family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened," said Uber chief Dara Khosrowshahi.  Former US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the collision should be a "wake up call to the entire AV industry and government to put a high priority on safety".  Advocacy group Consumer Watchdog called the accident a "tragedy we have been fighting years to prevent".

The Dow Jones plunged 400 points while you slept, recovering enough ground to close down 335 points.  It was dragged down by Facebook, after it was alleged political consultant Cambridge Analytica was able to obtain and misuse the personal data of millions of Facebook users.  Cambridge Analytica late Monday denied the charges.  This company played a key role in the orange clown's 2016 presidential campaign, although not as big of a role as Vladimir Putin.  The other problem is that there was no market leadership - steel and resource stocks that went up after the clown announced import tariffs leveled off to where they were, industrials fell, energy dropped.  Even other tech stocks that had nothing to do with Facebook's woes had no power to lift off.

A package explosion injured two people in Austin, Texas, making it the fourth such blast in the Lone Star capital.  Austin police are warning people of a "serial bomber":  "The belief that we are now dealing with someone who is using tripwires shows a higher level of sophistication, a higher level of skill," said police chief Brian Manley.  Two white males, aged 22 and 23, are in hospital in a serious condition.  They're the first white victims of the apparent bomber - two prior fatalities were black and Latino, which raised suspicions that the bomber is a white supremacist.  People are advised not to touch or even approach packages or objects that appear to be out of place or unusual, and to call police.

The orange clown wants to get his Duterte on.  Getting his ideas from despots and dictators, Donald Trump wants drug traffickers to face the death penalty as part of his plan to combat the US painkiller-addiction epidemic.  Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte famously blamed drug dealers for all of his country's problems and unleashed a murderous war on drugs that has seen as many as 12,000 killed in highly questionable extra-judicial killings.

Aside from being completely stupid on its face, Trump's plan faces numerous hurdles:  Many states have been rolling back the death penalty in recent years as more and more wrongful convictions have been exposed.  The other obvious problem is the Eighth Amendment of the US Constitution, which prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment"; only two people have been sentenced to death in US courts for non-fatal offenses, and each was overturned by higher courts.  And the third, why did a highly agitated Donald Trump sniffle and snort his way through his debate with Hillary Clinton, and did the reason for that come from a dealer?

A nine-year old Mississippi boy shot his 13-year old sister in the back of the head because she wouldn't give up the video game controller.  Just in case anyone forgot that America is awash in guns and filled with people who are not responsible enough to keep them safely locked up, away from the kids.  "This is the first time I've ever dealt with any child that was shot like that," said Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, "And I hope I never deal with it again."  But this isn't even a rare thing.  More US kids have been killed by guns in the past five and a half years than have US troops been killed in combat since the 9/11 attacks.

High winds on the Kansas prairie blew over a truck.

WTF is with that country, anyway?  Moving along...

Turkish police seized 1.4 kilograms of radioactive Californium-252 in an anti-smuggling raid in the capital Ankara.  Four people were detained.  It's believed the haul is worth more than US$70 Million on the black market.  Californium is used in nuclear reactors, metal detectors, and medical scanners, and it's believed that only the US and Russia are capable of manufacturing it.

Turkish-backed rebels have been seen looting in Afrin, after driving ethnic Kurds out of the northern Syrian city.  Witnesses said the Turkish-backed looters struck homes and shops, as well as government and military installations.

Italian authorities seized a charity's rescue ship after it picked up 216 migrants in distress in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya and brought them to Sicilian shores.  The Italians accuse Proactiva Open Arms of refusing to release the rescued people to Libyan authorities, who would have returned them to Africa.  The NGO's founder Oscar Camps accused the Libyans of threatening to open fire on refugee dinghies and demanded the charity hand over "the women and children" they had rescued.

Embattled Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is again denying involvement in the cover-up of government land sold to a far-right wing school at an extreme cut-rate price.  Moritomo Gakuen allegedly used its links to Abe's wife to secure the shady deal, and the government was caught redacting the names of both Abes and the PM's best friend Finance Minister Taro "elevator heels" Aso from official documents related to the sale.  The opposition is demanding Abe and his entire cabinet resign; recent polls say a majority want Aso to step down and Mrs. Abe to face questioning before parliament.
