The US is suspending the talks with Russia on ending or curbing violence in the Syrian Civil War. "Everybody's patience with Russia has run out," said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, accusing Russia and its Syrian regime allies of trying "to bomb civilian populations into submission." Since the most recent cease fire broke down, Syrian and Russian forces have pulverized rebel-held portions of Aleppo. Bombs fell on the city's only trauma center for a third time in a week, killing three maintenance workers.
This comes hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to suspended an agreement with the US on the disposal of surplus weapons-grade plutonium. Under the 2010 deal, the superpowers would have disposed of a combined 68 tons of the material, enough for 17,000 nuclear weapons, by burning it in special reactors. But Putin accuses the US of failing to live up to its end, which the US denies. The deal is not the lynch-pin of US-Russian nuclear disarmament, but carries heavy symbolic weight as Mr. Putin presses his grievances on Syria and Ukraine.
In the stupid US Presidential race, the top law enforcement officer for the state of New York has ordered the Trump foundation to stop fundraising, because it never registered as a legal charity. The cease-and-desist order follows a series of reports in The Washington Post that suggested improprieties by the Trump Foundation, including using the foundation to settle legal disputes and personal expenses wracked up by the orange clown and fascist demagogue Donald Trump. The Trump Foundation had no comment.
Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail in Ohio hammered Trump on this weekend's revelations in the New York Times that his 1995 showed he lost almost a Billion Dollars, and likely avoided paying his taxes for 18 years after that. "While millions of American families, including mine and yours, were working hard and paying our fair share, it seems he was contributing nothing to our nation. Imagine that," Clinton said. After his top-level surrogates told reporters that failing to pay his taxes makes Trump a "genius", Hillary turned the burner on full: "Here is my question: What kind of genius loses a billion dollars in a single year?" Clinton asked, noting that Trump lost this money as a casino owner - the only form of business which is guaranteed a profit.
DFAT says it is providing consular assistance to nine Aussie rocket scientists in Malaysia who stripped down to Malaysian Flag-themed budgie smugglers to "celebrate" the victory of Daniel Ricciardo in a Formula One race. "This shows a huge lack of respect to us as Malaysians; this is stupid behavior from foreigners who have no sense of cultural sensitivity and respect," said Sepang International Circuit CEO Datuk Razlan Razali, as quoted by the Straits Times newspaper. "It embarrasses their own country as well, it gives Australians a bad name," he added. The nine were remanded for four days from Monday pending investigation.
Businesses shut down in Poland on Monday, as tens of thousands of black-clad protesters took part in a national general strike against the RWNJ government's plans to outlaw all abortions and destroy women's meager reproductive freedoms. "We want doctors, not missionaries!" they chanted, and, "Jaroslaw, get out!" - in reference of ruling PiS party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who holds no elected office but appears to be calling the shots in government. Poland's existing abortion law is already one of the most restrictive in Europe, allowing abortion only in cases of rape, incest, a threat to a pregnant woman's health, or when the baby is likely to be permanently handicapped.
Greece's minister for citizens' protection ordered police to cease using tear gas against "protests by pensioners and workers". This is after Athens cops tear-gassed a crowd of elderly pensioners who were protesting against austerity cuts to their income. Thanks to the demands of Greece's northern European creditors, pensions in Greece have been cut repeatedly - elderly people are getting 25 percent to 55 percent less than what they received before the economic crisis. The cuts have left half of pensioners with a monthly income below the official poverty line.
The first funerals have been held for at least 55 people who were killed in a human stampede caused by cops in Ethiopia. The country has also declared three days of national mourning. On Sunday, police fired tear gas to disperse protesters at a religious festival attended by millions in the Oromia region, causing people to run and fall into a mud pit, where they suffocated. Clashes between police and demonstrators have intensified since.
The Taliban rolled into the northern Afghanistan town of Kunduz on Monday. The terrorist group pulled the same stunt last year, and was dislodged after a couple of days - although, not without the US accidentally bombing a Medecins Sans Frontieres hospital.
Gunmen held a weapon to Kim Kardashian's head and left her tied up in the bathroom of her Paris apartment before making off with millions of dollars in jewelry. The American reality TV star is said to be "badly shaken but physically unharmed". After making out reports with the Paris police, she flew back to New York City to join husband Kenye West. Investigators say the gang of five dressed as police, and left the luxury apartment's concierge handcuffed while they went upstairs and relieved Ms. Kardashian West of an estimated AU$14.6 Million in baubles. Cops say they fled on bicycles.
