A third minister in Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's government has resigned in the wake of allegations that the government tried to shield one of the country's biggest corporations from a corruption trial.  Treasury Board President Jane Philpott said she was enjoying her job, but "I must abide by my core values, my ethical responsibilities, constitutional obligations."  Attorney general and justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould resigned last month.  Trudeau has denied political meddling in an investigation into engineering giant SNC-Lavalin, but the controversy has his popularity slipping before the October election.

China is ratcheting up the pressure on Canada and the US over the Huawei controversy.  Beijing accused a detained Canadian man of espionage, by stealing trade secrets passed on to him from another detained Canadian.  And the telecom giant filed a lawsuit against the United States government over a law that restricts its market access.  The US considers all Huawei products to be a security risk because of the company's ties to Chinese intelligence.  Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou is unable to leave Canada, where she was arrested for possible deportation to the US, which accuses her of breaking international economic sanctions on Iran.

The Democratic Party controlled US House of Representatives launched a salvo on Donald Trump.  The Judiciary Committee led by New York's Jerry Nadler is demanding documents from 81 people and groups - including both of Trump's adult sons and several close business associates.  Mr. Nadler's committee is looking for evidence of obstruction of justice, including the potential interference by the president into criminal investigations; public corruption, including violations of the emoluments clause; and abuses of power, including attacks on the free press, the judiciary and law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, three more House committees are demanding to know what Trump has discussed with Russia President Vladimir Putin.  "Trump, on multiple occasions, appears to have taken steps to conceal the details of his communications with President Putin from other administration officials, Congress, and the American people," wrote Reps. Adam Schiff (D-California), Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland), the chairmen of the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight and Reform committees, respectively.  They especially want to know what the White House interpreters heard in concealed discussions.

A "monster tornado" is blamed for massive destruction in Beauregard, Alabama.  At least 23 people are dead, including at least three children - age six, nine, and ten - according to the local coroner.  The killer twister was one of dozens of tornadoes that swept through Alabama and Georgia on Sunday night in the US.

The lead singer for the British electronic music group The Prodigy, Keith Flint, is dead at age 49.  The band appeared to confirm the cause of death is suicide in a social media post: "The news is true, I can't believe I'm saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend."  The band is known for pushing the boundaries with its 1990s hits like "Firestarter", "Breathe", and "Smack My Bitch Up", blending punk and shock rock with rave culture.

Actor Luke Perry is dead at age 52 following a massive stroke last week.  Perry achieved international teen idol status with the 1990s TV drama "Beverly Hills 90210", acted in a few films including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and recently returned to television to play Archie's dad on "Riverdale".

Tanzanian cops rounded up 65 sham "traditional healers" in the ritual murders of ten children in January.  At least some of the victims - as young as five years - were albinos who were killed for their bodies parts used in idiotic and superstitious ceremonies to bring wealth and good fortune.  People with Albinism have always faced levels of discrimination and persecution in Africa, even in Tanzania where the population's Albinism rate runs way higher than the world average.  But the country was forced to enact tougher albino protect laws in 2015 with the rise of these murderous con-men.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order suspending his country's participation in the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.  This is after the United States said it would withdraw, claiming that Moscow had violated the agreement.  The Cold War-era treaty is credited with contributing to Europe's peace and stability in recent decades.

Pope Francis says the Vatican will unseal its records from the era of his predecessor Pius XII, who was head of the Roman Catholic Church from 1939 to 1958.  Critics say Pius didn't speak up hard enough against the rise of fascism and naziism, and did not do enough to protect Jews during the Holocaust.  "The Church is not afraid of history," said Francis, noting that Pius's legacy had been treated with "some prejudice and exaggeration".
