There's violence and chaos in the streets of Caracas, as the US-backed self-declared "president" Juan Guaido is calling for a coup against President Nicholas Maduro.  Declaring "Operation Liberty" the "final phase" of his version of the constant US-backed harassment of the democratically-elected government, Guaido demanded members of the military to defect to his side, although that didn't seem to happen in any numbers great or small.  Guaido's opposition ally Leopoldo Lopez took his family and sought shelter in the Chilean embassy.  Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez claimed, "A mediocre coup d'etat attempt has failed," but unrest had spread to 22 of the country's 24 provinces.

Naruhito will succeed his father Akihito on Japan's Chrysanthemum throne on Wednesday.  Dad abdicated, the first Japanese emperor to do so in 200 years, and perhaps only the second to do so without a sword to his neck (there was a lot of intrigue and forced abdications way back in history).  To mark the occasion, Japan extended the spring Golden Week holiday to ten days, giving a lot of people extra days off.

An Adelaide man is facing charges of making explosives, after police found and detonated four homemade bombs from his home on Heytesbury Road at Davoren Park.  The ABC reports that Acting Assistant Commissioner Craig Patterson said it was "not a terrorism-related incident".  But authorities told the court they had zeroed in on 43-year old Aaron Ellis after he posted on social media that "he hated Muslims".  The explosive in question is "Mother of Satan" - a nickname for triacetone triperoxide, also known as TATP.  It has previously been used in terrorist attacks around the globe and is manufactured with household chemicals.

A UK court has convicted an Australian-born cricketer Alex Hepburn to five years in prison for oral rape.  Prosecutors said he found the victim asleep in his apartment after she had consensual sex with his friend, and then assaulted her as part of a sexual conquest game on WhatsApp.  "It demeaned women and trivialized rape - a word you personally threw around lightly," the judge said, "Only now do you realize how serious rape is."

Italy has arrested eight members of a youth gang for the vicious physical abuse and robbery of a 65-year old mentally disabled neighbor.  Police in the town of Manduria found Antonio Cosimo Stano in a sorry state - impoverished, injured, and living in fear of further beatings.  The abuse with fists and sticks may have occurred severaltimes over a period of several months before anyone intervened.  He died after a couple of weeks in hospital, likely of internal injuries.  The suspects were six minors and the two adults aged 19 and 22.
