The weather was rainy when one of the supporting towers collapsed, sending thousands of tons of concrete and steel plunging 45 meters down to an industrial area, a factory, railroad tracks, and a small river.  "We saw lightning strike the bridge," said eyewitness Pietro M all'Asa to the Ansa news agency, "And we saw the bridge going down."  But engineers say lightning is unlikely to be the reason.  The Morandi Bridge in the northwestern city was constructed in the 1960s serves the Italian Riviera and southern French coast.  Interior Minister Matteo Salvini promised a thorough investigation "because it is unacceptable to die like that in Italy".

The silver Ford Fiesta plowed through a group of bicyclists before swerving into a guarded pedestrian walkway, narrowly avoiding two police officers.  Cops rushed people away from the scene before armed anti-terror officers arrived.  The driver was reportedly not known to to MI5 or counter-terrorism police; the investigation brought officers to search locations in Birmingham and Nottingham.  As dramatic as it was, only three people were slightly injured.

The lawyer for former Trump Campaign chairman Paul Manafort rested the defense's case without calling any witnesses.  It's a sign that they believe they created enough doubt in juror's minds without having to put Manafort on the stand to testify.  The judge in the trial refused the defense's request to throw out all 18 tax and financial charges filed against him by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Closing arguments are scheduled for Wednesday.

Chile's culture minister Mauricio Rojas has resigned after only four days in the job over his past comments criticizing a huan rights museum resurfaced.  The Museum of History and Human Rights documents the thousands of crimes and murders of fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet's regime.  Mr. Rojas in 2015 questioned the validity of the museum in Santiago, saying its purpose was to shock visitors and manipulate history.  Politicians from the Left and right joined human rights organizations in calling on Mr. Rojas to step down. Israel will reopen the cargo crossing into Gaza and the Palestinian fishing area off the coast - if the calm of the last few days continues.  Israel shut the Kerem Shalom crossing for all but humanitarian deliveries five weeks ago in response to protests by Palestinians along the border.  More than 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the end of March, and a Palestinian sniper killed an Israeli soldier.  The UN and Egypt have been working behind the scenes to end the clashes.

Jerusalem's chief psychiatrist says former Melbourne school principal Malka Leifer is fit to face an extradition hearing.  Australia has sought her return since 2014, on 74 counts of sexually abusing girls at the Adass Israel ultra-orthodox Jewish girls' school in Melbourne more than a decade ago.  The case resumes in Jerusalem in November.  Meanwhile, a Newcastle magistrate ruled Adelaide's former Catholic archbishop Philip Wilson can serve his one-year sentence for concealing historical child sex abuse in home detention as opposed to prison.

A Pennsylvania Grand Jury report says more than 300 Roman Catholic priests over the years abused at least 1,000 children - boys and girls - but the number of victims may actually be much higher.  The 18-month investigation is the most comprehensive yet on Catholic Church sex abuse in the United States; it covered all eight dioceses in the state.  State Attorney General Josh Shapiro said that the report details a "systematic coverup by senior church officials in Pennsylvania and at the Vatican".
