French police say the man who stabbed and killed a police officer and his partner had acted on the instruction of Islamic State to "kill infidels".  Police commander Jean-Baptiste Salvaing and his partner Jessica Schneider, herself a policewoman, were murdered in their home outside Paris; their toddler son was spared.  Police killed the suspect 25-year old Larossi Abballa in a shootout.  Abballa - a Frenchman of Moroccan descent who was convicted of terrorist-related offenses in 2013 -  had uploaded a video showing him inside the victims' home, confessing to the crime.  Police took three of Abballa's associates into custody.

As US investigators delve deeper into the theory that the gunman who murdered 49 people at an Orlando, Florida LGBT club was a self-loathing gay guy himself - a Muslim cleric has more or less fled Australia.  This, after a three-year old video surfaced of Sheik Farrokh Sekaleshfar appearing to approve of the death penalty for LGBT people.  Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had said that the sheik's entry visa was under review because of it.

There are suggestions that Omar Mateen's current wife Noor Salman could face charges, after she admited knowing of her husband's plans, going with him to buy the weapons used, and even driving him to the Pulse gay bar several times.  But, she didn't reach out to authorities with this information.  Mateen's first wife - who said she was physically abused by him - and several patrons of the Pulse bar say he at the very least was deeply closeted, frequently going to LGBT clubs and maintaining a profile on the dating site Grindr.

US President Barack Obama excoriated fascist demagogue and Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump's response to the Orlando massacre.  Without mentioning the Orange Clown by name, Mr. Obama obliterated his call to ban Muslim immigration:  "This was a country founded on religious freedom.  We don't have religious tests here.  If we ever abandon those values, we would have betrayed the very things we are trying to protect.  I will not let that happen."  President Obama and Democratic Party presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton separately ridiculed Trump's childish demand that they say the phrase "radical Islamic terrorism", as if they were magic words to make a problem go away.  Obama dismissed it as "campaign rhetoric".  Last month, former NSA and CIA Director Michael Hayden said that Islamic State uses Trump's bombast to recruit more terrorists for its cause.

Russian hackers broke into the US Democratic Party's computer network and copied the entire opposition research file on Republican party rival candidate and sentient enema Donald Trump.  The Kremlin denies the Russian government was involved.  But, the hackers "engage in extensive political and economic espionage for the benefit of the government of the Russian Federation and are believed to be closely linked to the Russian government's powerful and highly capable intelligence services," according to the cyber security firm CrowdStrike.

The European football body UEFA says Russia will be thrown out of the Euro 2016 tournament in France if its hooligans don't stop committing violent acts.  The Russians have already been fined more than AU$225,000 for the mob fights started by its fans around Marseilles.  French authorities are putting 4,000 extra police and security officials on duty for Russia's match with Slovakia on Wednesday, and the sale of alcohol will be restricted in the venue villages.

The UN World Health Organization emergency committee on the Zika Virus had concluded that there is a "very low risk" of  of international spread of the virus as a result of the Rio Olympics.  That seems to contradict that time in February when WHO declared the Zika epidemic to be a global emergency.  The virus - which is mostly transmitted by infected mosquitoes but also can be passed on through sexual contact - is associated with thousands of cases of microcephaly in newborn babies.  Pregnant woman are advised not to go to Rio.

The Chicago hairdresser credited with creating the "Beehive" hairstyle in the 1960s has died at the age of 98 of heart failure.  Margaret Vinci Heldt ran a salon in Chicago, and her creation first appeared on magazine covers in 1960.  Soon, it was atop fashion trend-setters like first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and actress Audrey Hepburn.  The style would reappear over the decades with varying levels of tongue-in-cheek; The B-52s named their band after it, Amy Winehouse sported a beehive wig, and Beyonce made it glamorous again.
