An Old Bailey jury convicted a notorious radical Islamic cleric and an associate of inviting support for their activities in Britain from Islamic State - a violation of the UK's anti-terrorism laws.  49-year old UK-born Anjem Choudary and 33-year old Mohammed Mizanur Rahman will be sentenced next month, and face life in prison.  Prosecutors have been trying to get Choudary for two decades, linking him to crimes such as the murder of soldier Lee Rigby on a London street in 2013, suicide bombings in Israel, and others - but until now he managed to stay just on this side of the line of free speech and plotting terrorism.  He is said to have inspired at least 100 attacks.

If you've ever thought that the terrorists recruited by people like Anjem Choudary aren't the sharpest knifes in the drawer, you'd be correct - and Islamic State (IS) agrees.  Leaked IS documents show that some of the morons recruited for jihad had to purchase "Islam for Dummies" and "The Koran for Dummies" from online bookseller Amazon in order to prepare for their lives as fodder for drone attacks or suicide vests.  A recent IS recruit who has since escaped and now identifies as LGBT said he finally figured out something was wrong, after being locked in intense study with IS cleric who eventually asked, "When you die, who should we call?"  DERP.

US President Barack Obama is getting close to achieving his 2008 campaign promise of clearing out and shutting down the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba.  The US is sending 15 inmates - twelve Yemenis and three Afghans - to the United Arab Emirates.  The men have never been charged with any crime, and some have been held as long as 14 years without trial.  The prison camp was established by then-president George W. Bush in 2002 for terror suspects, and has since become an enormous blotch on America's human rights record.

Russia has for the first time used an Iranian air base to launch air attacks on rebel targets in Syria.  Tupolev-22M3 long-range bombers and Sukhoi-34 strike fighters took off from Hamedan Air Base on Tuesday, hitting targets in Aleppo, Idlib, and Deir al-Zour provinces.  Local groups claim that 27 civilians were killed in the air raids.  A US State Department spokesperson said the development was "unfortunate but not surprising".  The US and Russia both oppose Islamic State, but Russia is backing the Syrian government of President Bashar Al-Assad while the US is supporting rebel groups.

A ten-year veteran North Korean diplomat in the London Embassy has quit and defected to a third country.  Mr. Thae Yong Ho fled London and are seeking asylum somewhere else.  A South Korean news report says that the North has been unable to locate him, and that the third country is not South Korea.  Mr. Thae is famous for promoting life in the Hermit Kingdom with such statements as, "If the people in this country, or in America, knew that there is a country in the world, where there is a free education, free housing, free medical care, then they'd have second thoughts."  Yeah, but it's still North Korea dude!

A wildlife park worker is dead after an Asian Black Bear somehow climbed into her car and mauled her.  This happened at the Gunma Safari Park northwest of Tokyo.  46-year old Kiyomi Saito suffered numerous injuries to her chest and torso.  It's the latest in a number of bear attacks in Japan, mostly caused by humans wandering around in wild areas, but also because of mishaps in wildlife facilities.

In happier bear news, Vienna's Zoo has two new Panda cubs.

Poland's nationalist government will make it a jailable offense crime to imply that Poland shoulders any responsibility for the Holocaust.  Millions of Jews, Roma, LGBT, and other enemies of Germany's nazi regime were killed in six German-run death camps in Poland.  The ruling right-wing "Law and Justice" (PiS) party has a clear majority in parliament and will be able to push the proposal through.  The reality is that anti-Semitism existed in Poland before, during, and after the nazi occupation, and that Poles sometimes took part in Nazi atrocities such as the 1941 Jedwabne Pogrom.  Poland also held trials after the war, convicting more than 20 people of treason just for the Jedwabne atrocity.  Sorry, PiS.. you can't hide from history.

President Edgar Lungu has been re-elected in Zambia's election, securing just over 50 percent of the vote and avoiding a runoff.  The opposition is claiming election fraud and the capital Lusaka has been brought to a standstill, with people wondering what happens next.  But opposition candidate, who got just over 47 percent of the vote, says he will challenge the results in court.
