Donald Trump's former political guru Steve Bannon has been subpoenaed to testify in front of a grand jury as part of special prosecutor Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian influence over Donald Trump's presidential campaign and presidency.  The New York Times reports it is a sign that Bannon is not personally the focus of the investigation, and it is the first time that Mueller is believed to have used the Grand Jury to get inside Trump's inner circle.  Bannon on Tuesday testified behind closed doors before the House Intelligence Committee, which is also investigating Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.  A far-right rabble-rouser, Bannon was Trump's political guiding light until being sacked last year; things got much worse between the two men after Bannon was quoted in journalist Michael Wolff's new book "Fire and Fury" trashing Trump and accusing Trump's son of treason for meeting with Russian officials during the presidential campaign.

Despite the orange clown's best efforts to sow chaos on the Korean peninsula, vice ministers from North and South Korea will meet in the Panmunjom truce village to the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, coming up on 9 February.  They've already agreed on the North sending a 140-member orchestra to perform during the Games.  Wednesday's discussions will center on the number of North Korean athletes and supporters who will travel to the South and their method of transport. The possibility of a unified Korean team will be another topic for the talks.

Venezuela's would-be right-wing revolutionary Oscar Perez is dead, killing in the nine-hour battle with military special forces outside Caracas this week.  Perez was wanted for stealing a helicopter and dropping hand grenades on government buildings last year; he then released videos calling for revolution, which didn't happen, and a bunch of self-aggrandizing photos depicting himself as a James Bond-like "man of action".  Venezuela's government says six other right-wing terrorists were killed in the siege, as were two members of the security forces; six people have been detained.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has begun massing tanks and troops along the southeastern border across from part of Syria held by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara considers a terrorist group.  Erdogan insists the YPG would assist Kurdish separatist groups on his side of the border.

Mozambique police arrested two members of a criminal gang that kidnapped an eleven-year old Albino boy, killed and mutilated him.  "The criminals took the boy to a deserted place, where they shaved his head and cut off his ears," said police spokesman Miguel Caetano.  In recent years, a sick and horrifying strain of faith healing has emerged in the country that claims the body parts of Albinos have magical powers for healing or other folk medicine uses.  At least three other gang members are at large.

Authorities is Riverside County, California say they had no prior contact with the parents arrested for shackling their 13 filthy and severely malnourished children to their beds.  A 17-year old girl escaped from the house of horrors and contacted police - because of her emaciated conditioned, cops initially believed she was aged just ten years.  David and Louise Turpin, aged 57 and 49 respectively, are charged with torture and child endangerment.  Neighbors in the city of Perris knew something was odd with unusual family of home-schoolers led by a grown-ass man pushing 60 with the same Prince Valiant haircut he had in elementary school - mostly because of the shy, evasive behavior of the children on the rare occasion they were allowed outside the stinky home.  But they didn't call police.

The Japanese town of Gamagori is frantically warning people to beware of potentially poisonous blowfish - known locally as Fugu - sold at a supermarket.  Warnings have even been blasted out of the town's public address system usually used to issued earthquake or tsunami warnings.  Fugu is a winter delicacy, but chefs must have a special license to cut it up to prove that they know how to get the sweet flesh out without tainting it with the deadly toxins in the blowfish skin, liver, and other organs.  A local supermarket in Gamagori city sold five packets of fugu without removing the livers - three have been recovered but the others are still out there.
