The pilot involved in the deadly plane crash at Essendon DFO shopping mall on Tuesday was already under investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) over a near-miss 17 months ago.  Max Quartermain and four American tourists were killed when their Beechcraft B200 Super King Air experienced engine failure soon after take-off from Essendon Airport.  In September 2015, Mr. Quartermain's plane came within 100 meters of another aircraft in bad weather at Mount Hotham, VIC.  The ABC reports he was ordered to re-do his instrument rating qualifications after the Hotham incident; however, friends described him as a highly respected and trusted pilot.

An Israeli court gave an 18-month prison sentence to the soldier who shot and killed a Palestinian man, execution-style.  Chilling video from the 24 March 2016 murder showed Abdul Fatah al-Sharif injured and incapacitated on the ground following a stabbing attack, and surrounded by Israeli soldiers.  Then a teenage IDF soldier, Elor Azaria is seen calmly walking up up putting a bullet in the prisoner's head.  Mr. al-Sharif's family called the exceptionally light sentence a "farce"; it was half of what prosecutors had requested.

Another wave of anti-Semitic threats and vandalism swept over the US.  Several Jewish community centers were evacuated after bomb threats, and an organized group attacked a Jewish cemetery in Saint Louis, Missouri, kicking over more than 170 headstones and monuments.  After waiting for several weeks, Donald Trump finally condemned anti-Semitic violence:  "The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are horrible and are painful and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil," Trump told reporters.  At least week's unhinged news conference in the White House East Room, a reporter for a Jewish magazine asked Trump about the rise in anti-Semitism that coincided with his campaign and election - which the orange clown took personally and verbally assailed the reporter.

The US Department of Homeland Security has revealed new, sweeping rules for deporting undocumented immigrants.  Memos signed by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly direct the expansion of immigration raids and the definition of "criminal aliens", while diminishing sanctuary areas and enlisting local law enforcement to execute federal immigration policy.  Despite this, a DHS spokesman claimed it will not produce "mass roundups, mass deportations".

The bodies of 87 bodies of would-be migrants washed up on Libya's Mediterranean coast, and a torn-up rubber dinghy was found nearby.  It's feared that as many as 120 may have perished on an attempted to cross the sea to Europe.

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen very publicly and very, very disingenuously cancelled a planned meeting with the Grand Mufti of Lebanon, in Beirut, Lebanon because the Mufti required her to wearing a scarf over her hair.  "I will not cover myself up," said the head of France's xenophobic and anti-Islam Front National party.  But the Mufti's people said the meeting was arranged with the understanding she'd have to wear the scarf, and were "surprised by her refusal".  Actually guys, you were set up.  Which is what happens when you try to meet fascists and racists halfway.

Dutch MPs approved a bill to legalize cultivation of Marijuana.  Professional growers working within certain conditions would be exempt from criminal punishment.  It's legal to buy small amounts of weed from Dutch coffee shops, but wholesaling it to the shops is still illegal.

Ecuador conservatives are trying to raise tensions as the final vote from the presidential election is tallied.  With 95 percent of ballots counted, Democratic Socialist Vice President Lenin Moreno has 39.28 percent - just short of the 40 percent he needs to avoid a run-off.  Authorities are telling people to just calm down and wait until the last vote is counted, but conservative challenger Guillermo Lasso said the delays "did not smell right".

For the first time, an American surgeon has been sentenced to prison for performing a botched surgery that killed his patient.  44-year old "Doctor" Christopher Duntsch got life in prison for the death of an elderly patient in 2014.  The jury was treated to a stream of patients, survivors, as well as doctors and nurses with tales of one-time neurosurgeon Duntsch's incompetence that left several patients maimed, paralyzed, or dead.  Prosecutors said he kept going out of "greed", because neurosurgeons make big money in America's for-profit health care system.  Not on trial:  The hospitals and health officials that let him keep operating despite mounting evidence of his crimes.
