The Federal Government is investigating reports that an Australian died on Mount Everest during the Nepal earthquake.  This person reportedly booked the trip with a company called Dreamers’ Destination Treks and Expeditions.  Several Australians are still unaccounted-for throughout the country, and the best place to check for their status is on the International Red Cross’s online register of people reported as missing.

The bodies of 18 climbers killed in by an avalanche have been brought down from Mount Everest, but hundreds of people are still trapped at base camp, and dozens marooned at Camp 2 because the path back down is blocked.  Sherpas say most of those killed were foreigners.  One is identified as Dan Fredinburg, a Google executive working on the driverless car project.  As for the rest, “Those who are able are walking down.  Others are being airlifted to Pheriche,” according to Nepalese tourism official Tulsi Gautam.

German climber Jost Kobusch was recording video at Everest base camp at the very moment of the avalanche, and uploaded it.  Warning, strong language.  The kind of strong language you’d expect if a ton of rocks and snow were heading towards you.

The death toll from the quake and all of the aftershocks is 2,500 and growing.  The aftershocks are interfering with rescue efforts.  They also kept the rubble shifting, making the many heavily damaged surviving structures unsafe, so people are sleeping outside in tent cities.  But that isn’t going too well, because rain swept the region overnight, making conditions miserable.  Telephone lines are cut, making communication difficult at best.  Puffs of smoke over the city are a reminder of the death toll, as Hindu temples and workers in open areas cremate the dead.

The UN negotiator who was leading Yemen peace talks says a power sharing deal among the factions was almost in hand just before Saudi Arabia launched its bombing campaign against the Houthi rebels.  Jamal Benomar spearheaded those negotiations until he resigned last week, but will still brief the UN Security Council on the situation in a closed-door session later on Monday.  He says once the bombs started falling, positions on all sides hardened.

South Africa is criticizing Nigeria for recalling its ambassador over a spate of attacks against foreigners, saying it was “unfortunate and regrettable” that a “sisterly country to want to exploit such a painful episode”.  Some African governments are accusing South Africa of not doing enough to stop xenophobic violence that killed at least eight people.

French President Francois Hollande is warning that anti-Semitism and racism are still alive on French soil.  He made his comments on a visit to the only nazi concentration camp in France – Natzweiler-Struthof in Alsace – for a ceremony to mark 70 years since the last of the camps were liberated.  France has been grappling with rising attacks on both Jews and Muslims after deadly shootings by Islamist gunmen in January.

Russia has jailed three women for performing a hip-hop style dance in front of a World War II memorial.  “This incident of disrespect for the memory of war history is unacceptable and any attempts to desecrate sites of military glory will be stopped immediately,” prosecutors said before the ladies were sentenced to jail for ten- to 15-days.   Few years ago, members of the punk rock band Pussy Riot spent more than a year in prison for performing a song critical of President Vladimir Putin at a church.

And in what’s become a weekly Furious 7 update, the high-octane franchise (omg did I just write that) has roared past (aauurrgh) Frozen, replacing the Disney princess hit as Number Five on the list of highest grossing movies of all-time.  Take that, nine-year old girls!  Furious 7 still had enough gas in the tank (stop me) to top the US box office and bring its worldwide hail to US$1,321,536,000.  However, there is one bump in the road (no no no) that might put the breaks (hack hack hack) on Furious 7 – The latest entry in the Marvel universe, Avengers: Age of Ultron, is upcoming.
