The Greens' Andrew Bartlett will resign from the Senate in August.  This will clear the way for Larissa Waters' return after she cleaned up her citizenship status.  Ms. Waters had to stand down last year after learning she was an unintentional dual citizen with Canada.  "I am preselected as the party's lead Senate candidate for the next federal election and I am absolutely ready to go back to work," said Waters.  Mr. Bartlett will vie for Brisbane's House of Representative seat, which he believes he has a solid chance of winning.

A judge ordered Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort to jail before his trial for allegedly attempting to influence witnesses in his criminal case.  Manafort is charged with tax fraud, money laundering, and illegal lobbying in the investigation into Russian influence over Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.  Manafort had been out on bail, with two ankle bracelets to monitor his behavior.  He allegedly used encrypted mobile phone apps to contact potential witnesses, which is illegal in the US.

The orange clown Donald Trump went ahead and slapped a 25 percent tariff on US$50 Billion in Chinese imports, heightening the stakes in the global trade war. 

Nicaragua is paralyzed by a 24-hour general strike, brought about by public dissatisfaction with President Daniel Ortega and his wife Vice President Rosario Murillo.  Union leaders, students, an opposition groups accuse Ortega of behaving like a dictator, using security forces to use violence to clamp down on dissent and free speech.  The capital Managua was frozen throughout the day, but there were reports of battles between cops and protests in outer communities.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and French President Emmanuel Macron appear to have smoothed over their dispute over Europe's immigration crisis.  The two are supporting the creation of EU "asylum centers" to be set up in countries where many migrants begin their journeys to Europe - northern Africa and Turkey would be prime candidates.  Earlier this week, Macron criticized Italy for refusing entry to more than 600 migrants rescued from the Mediterranean Sea (who have since been diverted to Spain) while Italy blasted its EU neighbors for not sharing the burden of caring for new arrivals.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is being surrounded with a wall of bullet-proof glass, France's compromise with anti-terror tactics and preserving the city's unique beauty.  The 35 Million Euro project will be completed next month, and replaces an unsightly series of metal barriers meant to protect the tower.  More than 240 have been killed in terrorist attacks in France since 2015.

A British court sentenced an army sergeant to life in prison for sabotaging his sky-diving instructor wife's parachute.  Victoria Cilliers plunged 1,200 meters, and suffered spinal and leg injuries.  She only survived because she fell into a newly-plowed field.  38-year old Emile Cilliers denied he tried to kill his wife, but prosecutors say he also tried to rig the kitchen stove top to explode.
