The Indian monsoon season has been extra-deadly in the state of Kerala, where officials have announced the death toll has sharply risen over the last ten days.  More than 300 people have been killed by flooding and rain-related causes such a landslides, with 164 of the fatalities occurring since 8 August.  Rescuers are pulling stranded people off of rooftops by boat and by helicopter; flooding has washed out or damaged hundreds of kilometers of road, while railroads and air service are disrupted.  At least 220,000 people have been routed from their homes.  Local officials say is the worst flooding in 100 years.

Pakistan's parliament has elected ex-cricketer Imran Khan as Prime Minister, confirming his sweeping election victory last month.  "In this country, before everything else, we have to make sure there is accountability," said Khan, in a speech after the vote in the National Assembly.  "Those who have looted this country and indebted it, I promise this today that no one will escape."  Khan takes the oath on Saturday.

The United Nations Human Rights Committee says Brazil's Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva should be allowed to run as a candidate in October's presidential elections.  He's jailed on corruption charges that Lula and his supporters say are highly suspect and politically-motivated to keep him from running for office again.  The committee oversees compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and says that Lula cannot be disqualified from the poll because his legal appeals are still ongoing.  Brazil's unelected conservative government is unlikely to agree, even though Lula is leading the polls by a wide margin.

Israeli Defense Forces shut down the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem after a Palestinian Israeli allegedly tried to stab a group of police in the ancient city. The attack was shot dead, and no officers were injured.  But after that, the IDF started removing worshipers from the mosque and shut down the gates to the Old City.  Palestinians gathered outside the gates to finish their Friday prayers outside.

More than half of the families of victims of the Ponte Morandi bridge collapse in Genoa, Italy have declined or refused to take part in the state funeral for those killed.  Many are flat out angry at the government over allegations of negligence and grandstanding by politicians.  One mother said she holds the Italian state responsible for the collapse, adding "the parade of politicians has been shameful"; another father told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, "We do not want farcical ceremonies."  At least 38 people died when the 50-something year old bridge collapsed during a storm.

The UN World Health Organization says it expects to find more cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) because militia violence is getting in the way with efforts to contain and stop the country's second outbreak of the year.  Health officials have logged 78 confirmed or suspected cases of the extremely deadly hemorrhagic fever since 1 August, resulting in 44 deaths.  "The worst-case scenario is that we have these security blindspots where the epidemic could take hold that we don't know about," WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said.

Donald Trump has been forced to cancel his much dreamed-of military parade on Veterans' Day, after the Pentagon said it would cost more than US$92 Million - or, around 666 percent more than projected.  Trump sought to blame local Washington, DC officials for allegedly asking for a "ridiculously high" figure to use city streets, an allegation that isn't grounded in any form of reality.  That brought a sarcastic and mocking response from the capital's mayor: "Yup, I'm Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington DC, the local politician who finally got thru to the reality star in the White House with the realities ($21.6M) of parades/events/demonstrations in Trump America (sad)."
