The Solomon Islands is asking for Australia's help in dealing with an environmental disaster:  A large ship ran aground on a reef and has so far leaked 80 tons of toxic heavy fuel oil next to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This is unfolding at Rennell Island in the southern Solomons.  What worse is that the Bintan Mining company - which chartered the MV Solomon Trader ship - is continuing to load and ship Bauxite from the nearby port, and therefore churning up leaked oil and spreading the disaster.  Bintan says it has no legal responsibility; the charter ship's Hong Kong-based owner King Trader Ltd. has sent a team to assess the situation.  Meanwhile, the ship still has 660 tons of oil on board, with no sign the leak is stopping.

Canada's Department of Justice has ruled the extradition hearing against Meng Wanzhou, the embattled executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei, can move forward.  This doesn't mean she will be instantly extradited to the US to face charges of breaking international economic sanctions on Iran, but there will be more hearings ahead.  Meng's defence team said in a statement that Meng maintains she is innocent of any wrongdoing and that the US prosecution and extradition is an abuse of legal process.

Pakistan has returned an Indian pilot who was shot down in the first (acknowledged) dogfight between the two powers in 48 years.  Wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman and his truly epic mustache walked across the Wagah border crossing in Punjab on Friday evening.  The two nuclear powers mixed it up in the sky over the disputed Kashmir region after terrorists based in Pakistan attacked and killed more than two dozen Indian police.

Portland, Oregon is a city of contrasts:  It's incredibly progressive, but the city police force has now been caught on video colluding with nazi scum to allow them to escape arrest after a raucous melee.  Anti-fascist demonstrators have long alleged that the cops and the white supremacists were in league before, during, and after the violent and provocative demonstrations by the hate group "Patriot Prayer".  Earlier, the cops' commanding officer Lieutenant Jeff Niiya was found to have exchanged friendly text messages with the leader of the racist group; he has since been reassigned and the Portland Police Department internal affairs unit is investigating the video.

A pilot has resign from South African Airways (SAA) after it was discovered he had been flying without a license for 25 years.  There apparently weren't any red flags about William Chandler's performance, until he was observed making some strange turns" after encountering turbulence over the Swiss Alps on a South Africa-to-Germany flight.  The investigation revealed he never had the right papers, and the airline - which never bothered to check his status prior to this - is suing him for "millions of rand".
