Bali police detained a New South Wales woman and a man from the UK for questioning in the killing of a police officer.  The Denpasar police chief said Sara Connor from Byron Bay told investigators that she was too drunk to remember what happened.  Police say they have witnesses placing Ms. Connor and British man David Taylor near the beach where the body of police officer Wayan Sudarsa was found early Wednesday with deep wounds to his head and neck.

The United Nations has finally admitted to its role in the Cholera outbreak that killed more than 10,000 people in Haiti.  This was caused by raw sewage from a peacekeeper's camp leaking into a major water supply after the 2010 Earthquake.  Prior to that, CHolera had not been detected in teh country for several decades.  "Over the past year the UN has become convinced it needs to do much more regarding its own involvement in the initial outbreak and the suffering of those affected by cholera," said Farhan Haq, a spokesman for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.  However, the UN still insists it has diplomatic immunity from legal repercussions.

The Paralympics will go on in Rio de Janeiro next month after the Olympics are over, but in a drastically downsized form.  Officials hoped 2 million tickets would be sold - only 300,000 were purchased.  Rio organizers also delayed paying travel grants to many athletes - that money is not being dispersed, but ten countries say they are still having difficulties securing transportation of their Paralympic athletes to Rio.  Once they arrive, they will find cuts to venue, staff, and athlete transport.

US swimmer Ryan Lochte released a statement of apology on his social media accounts for the idiotic drama in Rio, tweeting:  "I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that I am sorry."  The 32-year old Lochte became the poster boy for ugly Americans by lying about an armed robbery supposedly carried out by gunmen dressed like police to cover-up for a wild night out with much younger US swimmers during which a door at a petrol station was damaged.  One of the other swimmers, Jimmy Feigen has agreed to pay nearly US$11,000 to a Brazilian charity over his involvement; the other two denied involvement in the false report and were allowed to leave Brazil.

Speaking of ugly Americans, US Republican party presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign chairman has quit after only two months into the job - but two days after the campaign hired a new chief executive and manager.  Paul Manafort has come under fire for his ties to pro-Russian interests and Ukraine's pro-Moscow former president Viktor Yanukovych.  The continuing chaos in the campaign sucked the attention away from Trump's appearance among the flood victims of Louisiana - during which he wore the standard relief workers' uniform of a blue blazer, dress shirt, and pressed khakis.  SMDH.

A Russian lawmaker has introduced a bill to outlaw the despicable and internationally-condemned practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).  United Russia deputy Maria Maksakova-Igenbergs' bill says that FGM "has no place in a civilized society", and mandates a ten year prison term for those who subject girls to it.  This comes after a report by the rights group Russian Justice Initiative (RJI) which documents FGM going on in some mountainous areas of Dagestan, a region in Russia's North Caucasus near Georgia and Azerbaijan.  The report shocked Russians and others who thought the problem to be confined to rural Africa and Arabia.  But the reaction from others was even worse:  Grand Mufti Ismail Berdiyev of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordination Center called for FGM to be carried out on "all women to reduce lechery" and "sexuality", and a leading member of the Russian Orthodox Church defended the Mufti against "feminist" criticism.  BTW, FGM is nowhere to be found in the Koran or Bible.  So, we know what both of these guys are full of.

Germany's Interior Minister is calling for a partial ban on the Burka:  "We call on everyone to show their face," said Thomas de Maiziere of the ruling party, whose proposal would prevent anyone from wearing the veil in schools, universities, nurseries, public offices, or while driving.  These are places, he explained, where face to face communication is necessary - and the full face veil impedes that.  It follows bans on the so-called "burkini", a full body swimsuit marketed to Muslim women, on a few French beaches.  BTW, burkas and hijabs are nowhere to be found in the Koran.

A mentally ill man screaming "Allahu Akbar" stabbed an Orthodox Jewish man on a street on Strasbourg, France.  The victim's life is not in danger.

Actress Amber Heard says she will donate her entire US$7 Million divorce settlement from actor Johnny Depp to charities that work with abused women and ill children.  Half will go to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) office to prevent violence against women, and the other half will go to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.  Heard and Depp wed in February 2015; but in May of this year she revealed a bruised cheek to the world, accusing Depp of hitting her and throwing a mobile phone during a fight.  He denied it.

Nicaragua is struggling to contain a massive fire at the nation's only oil refinery.  The blaze at the Puma Energy facility in the Pacific port of Puerto Sandino has been burning for two days.
