French police shot and killed a terrorist who himself shot and killed three people and wounded five other in a spree in southern France.  Authorities say 26-year old petty criminal Redouane Lakdim killed the first victim in a carjacking in Carcasoone, shot and wounded several officers who were jogging, and drove to a supermarket in Trebes where he killed two more people.  Police swarmed the area, and a SWAT officer traded himself for the hostages in the food store, killing the terrorist in an apparent gunfight.  "He has saved lives, and done his role and his country proud," said President Emmanuel Macron, "He is currently fighting for his life, and all our thoughts are with him and his family."

French President Emmanuel Macron said alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced they would take swift and coordinated action against Russia for the poisoning of a former Russian spy in southern England earlier this month.  The EU has also recalled its ambassador to Moscow.  "We consider this attack as a serious challenge to our security and European sovereignty so it calls for a coordinated and determined response from the EU and its member states," Macron said.  Mind you, they are showing this loyalty even as the UK negotiates its exit from the European Union, a process that has proven to be slower and thornier than London had expected.

Tens of thousands marched in cities across Poland over the far right wing government's latest awful move, to further restrict Women's Reproductive Rights.  Abortions are already mostly unobtainable in the heavily Roman Catholic country, but the ruling PiS party wants to ban terminations in cases of fetal abnormality, including Down's Syndrome.  Because it's impossible to keep count, there could be as many as 10,000 to 150,000 illegal abortions in Poland every year - another regressive and repressive change to the law would only increase that.  As it stands now, most women who can afford it head over the border to Germany for this sort of medical care.

Peru's congress finally accepted Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's resignation from the presidency.  He quit on Wednesday, on the eve of impeachment hearings.  But some holdouts in congress wanted the process to go ahead anyway, and PPK threatened to rescind his resignation - not even sure if it's legal to do that - unless they accepted it.  Fine, begone, they said.  Martin Vizcarra was sworn in as president, vowing to fight corruption ha ha ha yeah right.  Kuczynski, a 79-year old former Wall Street trader who worked at the IMF and the World Bank is the third Peruvian leader to be brought down by scandal related to the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht that is linked to pay to play scandals the world over.

Somalians are upset over a new five percent sales tax on retail transactions, the first such tax in 30 years.  The five percent tariff was a requirement of the IMF's deal to relieve some of Somalia's debts, but is has made everything more expensive in the developing African nation.

Doctors and counselors are treating the 105 schoolgirls freed from a month with their Boko Haram abductors.  Five girls reportedly were killed in the mass abduction in Dapchi Town a month ago.  Only one is still being held by the terrorists, and her father praised her for refusing to be forcibly converted to the group's idiotic brand of radical Islam.  Boko Haram is still holding about a hundred girls from the Chibok mass abduction in 2014.

The orange clown Donald Trump signed a US$1.3 Trillion bill to fund the US government for just six months, vowing never to do that again.  It averts a threatened government shut down, the third of the year.  The White House on Thursday claimed that Trump would sign it - but then on Friday morning, he balked after watching negative coverage of the bill on the US conservative Fox network, grousing that it didn't include enough money for his stupid proposed border wall (that he promised Mexico would pay for).  Later in the day, he signed it, whinging all the while.
