Cape Town officials are urging residents to turn off the taps to their toilet cisterns and to avoid flushing until absolutely necessary as the South African city's drought crisis gets even worse.  "There are a lot of people who have been in denial and now they suddenly realize this is for real," said Shirley Curry, one of many queued up at a natural spring pipeline to fill jugs with water.

The reservoirs are nearly dry, and most of the area that once was covered with water now resembles desert.  Provincial government head Helen Zille is urging people to limit their water usage to 50 liters or fewer a day. "That is not difficult if we all put our minds to it in our homes and in our workplaces," she said.  Zero day - the day that there will be no more water to flow through the city's system - is projected to arrive in about two months.

China and India appear to be massing military forces near the Doklam plateau high up in the Himalaya Mountains.  China and the kingdom of Bhutan are in a dispute over the plateau, and India backs the tiny nation's claim.  Calling it a "rematch at the top of the world", the US global intelligence company Stratfor says satellite imagery "confirms that both China and India are pursuing a wide-ranging strategic build-up" involving a variety of fighter jets and attack helicopters on both sides.  The two nuclear powers have had border battles in the 1960s and again in the 1980s; but today, they have uch more powerful and sophisticated weaponry available - and Stratfor is describing another clash as "inevitable".

The Reuters news agency is reporting that there was a political deal reached between Peru's embattled President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and lawmaker Kenji Fujimori that led to the pardon of his father, former dictator Alberto Fujimori who was serving prison time for crimes against humanity.  The two apparently began discussions in the months prior to the much-criticized Christmas pardon; a week after the pardon, the younger Fujimori voted against impeaching Kuczynski on corruption charges, leading to allegations of a quid pro quo.  The elder Fujimori was convicted of forcing or coercing thousands of indigenous women to undergo sterilization, and ordering death squads to murder his political opponents.

A Canadian billionaire couple found dead in their Toronto mansion late last year were murdered, likely by strangulation.  Police disavowed earlier reports of a murder-suicide scenario in the case of pharmaceutical magnate Barry Sherman and his wife Honey Sherman, aged 75 and 70 respectively.  Detectives say the couple - found hanged by their swimming pool - was "targeted"; there was no sign of forced entry; and investigators are working through a lengthy list of suspects.

Donald Trump was roundly booed at the World Economic Forum at Davis for his comments on the news media.  The orange clown said, "It wasn't 'til I became a politician that I realized how nasty, how mean, how vicious and how fake the press can be," as media outlets back in the US confirmed reports of his attempts to fire the special prosecutor investigation his presidential campaign's alleged involvement with Russian intelligence attempting to sway the 2016 election.  Beyond that, the moron stuck to his talking points on tax cuts for the wealthy and deregulation before heading back to Washington.
