Just weeks before the 2016 Summer Olympics are to commence, the Rio de Janeiro government has declared a "financial emergency", because of rapidly declining tax revenue to to the widening recession and slump in oil prices.  State governor Francisco Dornelles said the "serious economic crisis" could stop the government from "honoring its commitments" to host the Games and cause a "public calamity".  In addition to the recession, Brazil is still dealing with the Zika crisis, and is run by an "interim" (coup) government currently impeaching the democratically-elected president.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed the decision to ban Russia's track and field team from the Summer Olympics in Rio, closing the door on the case.  Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko in Moscow admitted that "our athletes have no chance" of competing in Brazil.  The International Association of Athletics Federations banned the Russians a day earlier based on evidence of widespread, state-sponsored doping on the Russian team.

The man charged with the murder of British MP Jo Cox gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" at his first court appearance in London, and refused to confirm his address.  Scrawny, wimpy, worm-poop, scumbag, idiot Thomas Mair appeared wearing a grey police department tracksuit, flanked by two cops; his next court date is at the Old Bailey on Monday.

Meanwhile, the family of Jo Cox visited the place where Thomas Mair allegedly shot and stabbed her, which is now covered with flowers and tributes to the slain Labour MP.  They read the cards on the bouquets and thanked people for the support that had "genuinely made a difference" and is helping the family through some "dark times".  "Jo would want us to focus on that which unites us not which divides us," said Mrs. Cox's sister Kim Leadbeater, "She will live on through good people in the world."  A fund set up in honor Jo Cox has raised almost AU$900,000 in 24 hours.

Indonesia plans to send a group of Tamil asylum seekers back out to sea, once repairs are made to their rickety boat.  The 44 men, women, and children were allowed ashore in Aceh province overnight, although they were put up in tents instead of proper lodgings.  A year ago, Indonesia allowed a group of Rohingya Muslims fleeing Myanmar to stay, but Jakarta insists this situation is different because the group specifically set out for Australia.  The Tamils had been at sea for about a month; Amnesty International believes they may have been fleeing persecution in Sri Lanka.

An Egyptian court sentenced two Al Jazeera employees and a third journalist to death for allegedly leaking state secrets.  The sentences can be appealed.  Three other defendants were also sentenced to death, and former president Muhammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood and two associates recieved life sentences.  Morsi was already sentenced death, life, and 20-years in other cases in Egypt's incredibly effed up excuse for a court system.

Authorities in Belgium charged three men with terrorism-related crimes, following two days of raids and the detention of 40 people.  Police say the "immediate intervention" was necessary because they feared an imminent attack on football fans gathering to watch the national soccer team.  Belgian PM Charles Michel says the country's terror alert will remained elevated, but public events will go on as scheduled.

The US is demanding answers from Moscow after Russian forces launched aerial attacks against Western-back rebels in Syria.  This happened last week as the rebels were battling Islamic State near the al-Tanf border crossing with Iraq, and even after the US took "extraordinary" measures to contact the Russians to break it off.  "The Russians initially said they were coming in to fight (Islamic State), and that's not what they did," said US Defense Secretary Ash Carter.

A Colorado woman fought off a mountain lion that attacked her five-year old son as he played outside the house with his older brother.  The mother ran outside, where she saw the animal on top of her son and she dragged the boy away.  Police later cornered and shot two lions, and necropsies will be done to determine if either attacked the boy, who is hospitalized in a good condition with lacerations and scrapes.  It's been a year since the last lion attack on a human in Colorado.
