The death toll in Yemen's Cholera outbreak has risen to 1,500 lives lost, according to the UN World Health Organization, up from 1,300 just two weeks ago.  Likewise, the number of confirmed and suspected cases has skyrocketed from 200,000 to 246,000.  The health and sanitation infrastructures in the Arab world's poorest country have collapsed under the weight of the civil war between the Saudi-backed Sunni Muslim government and Iran-backed Shiite Muslim Houthi rebels.

More than 60,000 pro-democracy protesters marched in Hong Kong, in a stinging rebuke to Chinese President Xi Jinping who had earlier warned against challenges to Beijing's authority.  This came on the 20th anniversary of Britain handing its territory back to the control of the mainland, which had promised to preserve Hong Kong's democratic traditions under "One China, Two Systems".  That promise has been chipped away in recent years.  "Xi doesn’t understand Hong Kong people," said veteran democracy campaigner Martin Lee, who added that the Beijing government doesn't "have core values and principles to stand on, but we cherish our freedoms, civil rights, and the rule of law".

Thousands marched in central London to protest the loathed austerity policies of Tory PM Theresa May.  Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told the crowd he is "determined to force a new election".

Brazil's top prosecutor says he didn't use all of the available evidence against President Michel Temer, whom he charged this week in a corruption probe - but it will all come out.  Prosecutor General Rodrigo Janot told an investigative journalism conference that his strategy was to thoroughly investigate the evidence and file charges separately, rather than risk Temer's lawyer wiping it all out at once with a single sympathetic judge.  Janot last week charged Temer is a massive graft scheme.

Pope Francis sacked the head of the office that is handling the Roman Catholic Church's sex abuse scandals around the world.  Sources in the Vatican say that the Pope hasn't seen eye-to-eye with Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, lead of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which evaluates accusations of priests molesting or raping young people.  Under Mueller's management, the church amassed a 2,000-case backlog while just last week Cardinal George Pell was criminally charged in Melbourne with alleged historic sex offenses which Pell denies.

Qatar says it has no plans to cave to a list of demands presented by its Arab neighbors, and says the list - which include things like breaking off relations with Iran and shutting down Al Jazeera News - was "made to be rejected".  Saudi Arabia and Egypt lead a bloc attempting to quarantine Qatar diplomatically and economically.  On a visit to Rome to drum up some new trade, Qatar's foreign minister said the impasse will have to be solved through negotiation and not militarily.

Past and present world leaders paid tribute to the late former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who oversaw German reunification after the Cold War and was instrumental in founding the European Union and single currency.  "Helmut Kohl gave us the chance to be involved in something bigger than ourselves," said former US President Bill Clinton, noting Kohl's frequent willingness to put continental interests before his own.  Fittingly, the funeral took place not in Germany but in Strasbourg, France and Kohl's coffin was draped with an EU flag instead of the German one.

Back in Clinton's hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, 25 people were shot at a Hip Hop concert at a downtown nightclub.  Although some are recovering, others have traumatic injuries including at least one young man in hospital with a bullet lodged in his spine.  Arkansas' current governor is Asa Hutchinson, a former National Rifle Association (NRA) official known for opposing any and all attempts to limit gun ownership in the US.  "Little Rock's crime problem appears to be intensifying," Hutchinson said.  "Every few days it seems a high-profile shooting dominates the news, culminating with this morning's event."  Gosh, I wonder how that could be happening?

Just yesterday, a doctor picked up an AR-15 assault weapon and stormed the hospital in New York City's Bronx borough that had fired him.  5-year old disgruntled doctor Henry Bello killed well-liked Dr. Tracy Sin-Yee Tam, wounded six more people, and unsuccessfully tried to set a fire before killing himself as police closed in.  Bello spent a lot of time blaming other people for his troubles, and had a misdemeanor conviction for imprisoning and assaulting a woman.  But despite that, and thanks to the NRA's efforts to block any and all forms of gun control, Bello was able to obtain an assault weapon and go on a rampage.

Mexican police and drug gang members shot it out in Mazatlan, a popular tourist beach town in drug-plagued Sinaloa state.  At least 19 people were killed.

The promoter behind the aborted "Fyre Festival" has been arrested and faces up to 20 years in prison.  Organizer Billy McFarlane sold packages with price tags of  US$4,000 to $100,000 for the gathering, which was promoted as bringing together top name musicians, artists, and chefs in an exclusive setting in the Bahamas.  When the rich kids got there, they found no facilities, top acts cancelling, and crappy cheese sandwiches with wilted lettuce on white bread.  US Feds say McFarlane provided false documentation to get a $1.2 Million loan to put on the festival, which crumbled under its own incompetence.

Adele cancelled the final two shows of her tour, after telling fans that the current one is her last and that she may never perform live again.  The dates at London's Wembley stadium were sold out, and the 29-year old singer told fans via social media that "to say I'm heart broken would be a complete understatement" and "I'm already maxed out on steroids and aids for my voice".  Adele has already had surgery on her vocal cords in 2011.
