At least 66 people are now dead as a result of a fuel pipeline explosion in Mexico.  Dozens are injured, and many are still missing.  Suspected fuel thieves are believed to have burst through the pipeline on Friday, prompting scores of villagers around Tlahuelilpan, Hidalgo state to gather around with containers and jugs.  "A lot of people arrived with their jerry cans, because of the gasoline shortages we've had," said local resident Martin Trejo.  Something sparked the gushing pipeline and the inferno engulfed the people.  Townspeople blamed security forces for not dispersing the crowd earlier, but Public Security Minister Alfonso Durazo replied, "At some point there were too many people there and the army and military personnel withdrew to avoid problems."

The United Nations High Commission on Refugee fears that 170 people have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea this weekend.  Italy's Navy said a ship sank off the coast of Libya with 117 people on board, while Moroccan and Spanish searchers have been unable to located another lost boat in the western Mediterranean.  The UN human rights agency said more than 2,200 people lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean in 2018.  "We cannot turn a blind eye to the high numbers of people dying on Europe's doorstep," UN refugee high commissioner Filippo Grandi said in a press release.  "No effort should be spared, or prevented, from saving lives in distress at sea."

The Yellow Vests were back in Paris and other French cities.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Donald Trump's latest offer of a "compromise" on a border wall is a "non-starter".  That might be because Trump actually raised the amount of money he wants to begin construction of his border wall from US$5.6 Billion to $5.7 Billion.  Trump also didn't offer permanent status for the so-called "Dreamers", those who were brought as children by their parents into the US as undocumented migrants but who as adults have fully integrated into its society - instead his temporary fix kicks the can down the road for three years.  Democrats say they will not entertain any of this while the US government is shut down.  A series of polls released last week showed that most Americans blame Trump and the Republicans for the shutdown.

Outrage on social media, after several videos from several angles showed students from a Kentucky Roman Catholic high school menacing a small group of Native American demonstrators on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.  Many of the young white males from Covington Catholic High School in Covington, Kentucky - a suburb of Cincinnati - were wearing Trump's red "Make America Great Again" hats, and they chanted "build the wall!" referring to Trump's dream project.  The indigenous demonstrators were mostly elderly and included military combat veterans.  The school and archdiocese made its social media pages closed for comments as the videos provoked disgust throughout America.

A judge in Chicago sentenced ex-cop Jason Van Dyke to nearly seven years in prison for murdering black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014.  The City and the police department were roundly criticized for blocking the release of squad car video, which eventually got out and showed that the teen was walking away from officers - until Van Dyke sped up, exited his car, and immediately and ruthlessly pumped 16 shots into the kid.  Van Dyke is eligible for parole in two years, meaning that with time already served he will likely do no more than three years in prison for killing under the color of authority.  To compare and contrast and show how messed up this is, the former governor of Illinois is still serving a 14 year prison term after being convicted of discussing possibly taking a bribe.

Poland farewelled Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz, who was mortally wounded in a stabbing at a charity event a week ago.  He was a very popular man, serving twenty years in office, and correspondingly it was a very large event - spilling out onto Gdansk streets.

The Prime Minister of Burkina Faso Paul Kaba Thieba and his entire cabinet have resigned from office.  The reason is unclear, but the government has faced growing pressure over a rise in the number of kidnappings and jihadist attacks.

Okay, so an Alpaca walks into an optometrist's office.. I don't have a punch line, it actually happened.  Staff at Les Opticiens Mutualistes on Hennebont's Rue Nationale said, "We saw him walk past the shop, he stopped in front of the automatic doors that opened, and he walked in very quietly," and, "He was not at all aggressive, he was just doing his thing."  The owner showed up a half hour later and took the fuzzy visitor home.
