One of the suspects in the assassination of Kim Jong-nam in Malaysia says she was paid only about AU$120 to take part in what she thought was a prank for a reality TV show.  25-year old Siti Aisyah told police she was given the cash to smear "baby oil" on the face of the man who turned out to the the estranged brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.  The substance turned out to be VX, a nerve agent frequently used in chemical weapons of mass destruction.  A Vietnamese woman and a North Korean man have also been arrested in connection with the killing, and at least seven other suspects are wanted by police.  North Korea denies running the operation.

German police shot and arrested a man who drove a car into a group of people in Heidelberg.  Although the episode resembled earlier jihadist attacks in Germany and France, the motive is unclear, and the attacker does not appear to come from an immigrant background.  Investigators say the 35-year old German rammed a rented hatchback into a sidewalk and took off running; an elderly man died in hospital and two more people were hurt.  This attack resembled

A reporter for Kurdish TV was killed by a roadside bomb as she covered the battle for Mosul in northern Iraq.  30-year old Shifa Gardi had been presenting a daily programme on the Mosul offensive for Rudaw TV and had recently started to cover the war from inside Mosul.  Camera operator Yunis Mustafa was injured.  Gardi is credited with helping to break down stereotypes of male-dominated journalism.

Meanwhile, the rebels formerly known as the Al Nusra Front killed at least 32 people in twin attacks around Homs, Syria.  Western back rebel groups condemned the attack by "Tahrir al-Sham", which broke off from al Qaeda last year and rebranded itself despite maintaining a jihadist outlook.  A monitoring group says the attacks focused on the headquarters of military security in the city and also a branch of state security.

Mexico is warning US fascist demagogue Donald Trump against putting a 20 percent border tax on incoming Mexican goods to pay for his stupid effing border wall.  Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said Mexico City could easily place tariffs on selected goods from US states reliant on exports to Mexico.  Texas beef springs to mind, and Videgaray notes that other states including Iowa and Wisconsin as possible targets for retaliatory tariffs.
