Australian Federal Police (AFP) conducted a series of raids around Sydney, arresting four people in what PM Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed is a move to thwart a plot to bomb or otherwise bring down an airplane.  These raids took place in Surry Hills, Lakemba, Wiley Park, and Punchbowl, and were conducted by the Sydney Joint Counter Terrorism team.  Authorities said the raids weren't long-planned, but rather inspired by rapidly-developing intelligence.  The AFP released a statement:  "These searches and the broader investigation remain ongoing, and further information will be made available at the appropriate time."

Attorney-General George Brandis says the Islamist uprising in the southern Philippines poses an urgent threat to Indonesia and the region that includes Australia.  The senator said this at a security conference in Manado, North Sulawesi which was co-chaired by Oz and the host country Indonesia.  Brandis blames the break-up of the so-called Islamic State, leaving jihadists to fan out in the world looking for new places to "rebase themselves".

German police say the man who killed one person and injured six in a supermarket knife attack in Hamburg was a "known Islamist".  His motives are unclear as he suffered mental health problems, and did not come to the store armed - he pulled the knife off of a store shelf.  Efforts to deport the man before the attack had been bogged down because he entered Germany in 2015 without identification papers.

There's a fog of silence around an attack at the home of Kenyan Vice President William Ruto, who was not at the house when a man entered the guarded compound and injured a cop with a machete.  Security forces have the situation locked down and the media is being kept 500 meters from the scene.  Earlier reports claimed a number of gunmen attacked Ruto's home.  The incident comes ten days before Kenya holds presidential, legislative and regional elections.

Big, fat, orange sore-loser Donald Trump is threatening to end key payments to insurance companies made under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), known colloquially as Obamacare.  He's demanding lawmakers repeal and replace the signature achievement of his more talented and sane predecessor Barack Obama.  The latest gop attempt to repeal it would have thrown tens of millions of Americans off of their healthcare plans, but was thwarted by Senator John McCain in a hilarious act of political payback to Trump.  Who sucks at his job.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) fired back, saying Trump should "stop playing politics with people's lives and health care, start leading, and finally begin acting presidential."  He continued, "If the president refuses to make the cost sharing reduction payments, every expert agrees that premiums will go up and health care will be more expensive for millions of Americans."  Congressional republicans have had seven years to come up with a workable alternative to Obamacare and have campaigned on repealing it, but have loused up their own house in the process.

Venezuela today begins voting on the creation of a constituent assembly of 545 representatives to rewrite the constitution.  The Socialist government says this will broaden democracy and direct representation, while the right-wing claims will turn the country into a dictatorship by guaranteeing minority rule.  But if the idea is so unpopular - and if turn-out will be as low as the right-wing predicts - why then is the opposition hell-bent on stopping the vote through setting up barricades preventing citizens from casting ballots and assassinating candidates?  Why not jsut take advantage of their purported "majority" and let democracy run its course?  Hmmmmm....
