At least 384 people are dead because of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Palu City and other communities on Indonesia's Sulawesi islandAuthorities are concerned the death toll will rise after they're finally able to assess more remote areas that have been cut off.  "We're now getting limited communications about the destruction in Palu city, but we have heard nothing from Donggala and this is extremely worrying," read a statement from the Red Cross.  Thousands slept outside because their homes were too damaged to trust the integrity of the walls and roofs; many of the 500 injured are being treated in tents because hospitals literally came apart.

Thanks to social media, images of the destruction in and around Palu are making their way out to the world.  Here's the Air Traffic Tower of Mutiara Sis Al Jufri Airport, where 21-year old controller Anthonius Gunawan Agung stayed at his post to make sure Batik Air Flight 6321 could take off safely at the exact moment of the quake.  He jumped four storeys to the ground just before the concrete roof pancaked down on the control area, but he later died of his injuries from the fall.

And here it is again, after the magnitude 7.5 earthquake (L), and after the tsunami flooded the city (R).  Even though the image is dark, you can see the floating debris in the courtyard, and how the water level is high up in the entry archways, way higher than the average human's height.

The Teluk Palu bridge collapsed, disconnecting the 300,000 people on one side from the 300,000 on the other.  Here it is before the quake:

The quake pulled the two sides in different directions, so that they could no longer be connected with a straight line.

China reported a 14 percent jump in the number of people living with HIV and/or AID, and not because of intravenous transmissions.  Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1997 but homophobia still runs rampant, forcing most LGBT people to pursue their lives underground.  So even though China virtually eliminated HIV transmission via infection blood transfusions, the vast majority of new cases are now transmitted through sex: 40,000 new cases were reported in the second quarter of 2018 alone.  Now, more than 820,000 people are affected in China.

A brawl in Barcelona pitted 6,000 Catalan separatists trying to hold their demonstration against 3,000 at a pro-police rally at the same time.  Good planning!  Barcelona's mayor Ada Colau asked to "avoid confrontation" between the two sides, who pretty much ignored that advice.  Separatists threw a lot of stuff at the others and the cops, while chanting, "October 1, we don't forget nor forgive" - referring to last year's failed Catalan independence referendum.  Cops battled back, and a good time was had by all.

Tens of thousands of people marched through central Buenos Aires, Argentina to demand the government legalize women's reproductive rights.  A bunch of decrepit old white men in the Senate blocked a bill in August, but the campaigners are not giving up.  The weekend demonstrations were part of a global campaign calling for legal and safe abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean.
