Russian police detained more than 1,500 people at an anti-Putin rally in Moscow and other cities, two days before the Russian president is to be inaugurated for his fourth term in office.  Among those detained was opposition leader Alexi Navalny, who was barred from running against Vladimir Putin in the election, literally carried away struggling through the crowd of demonstrators.  A crowd of nationalist Putin supporters tried to shout down the protesters.  But overall, there is little desire to engage in street protests in Russia - and yet the government of Vladimir Putin cracks down on dissent, mindful of what has happened in recent years in Ukraine and Libya.

The US is officially resurrecting the Second Fleet, specifically to counter Russia.  "Our National Defense Strategy makes clear that we're back in an era of great power competition as the security environment continues to grow more challenging and complex," said Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson in an announcement on board the USS George H.W. Bush at Norfolk, Virginia.  "That's why today, we're standing up Second Fleet to address these changes, particularly in the north Atlantic."  Russia has increased naval patrols in the Baltic Sea, North Atlantic, and Arctic Ocean, and its submarine deployments are at the highest level since the end of the Cold War.

Idaho State University in the far northern US has lost a gram of weapons-grade plutonium.  That's not enough for a nuclear weapon; but it is enough for a so-called "dirty bomb", if it winds up in nefarious hands.  The school's director of research Dr Cornelis Van der Schyf blames incomplete paperwork from 15 or more years ago for the discrepancy.  US nuclear regulators are proposing a fine of US$8,500, which comes out to about $11,275 Australian.

Thousands are now on the run from the Kilauea volcano on the east side of Hawaii's big island.  A Magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Friday ripped open new seems that spit out deadly hot lava in the Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens area, as well as high levels of toxic sulfur dioxide gas.  It also triggered the collapse of a coastal cliff.  So far, the eruption is not impacting air traffic at all.  "The closest resort areas, in Kona and the Kohala Coast on the island of Hawaii's west side, are more than 100 miles away from where the lava flow is occurring and shielded by the massive mountains of Maunakea and Maunaloa," said the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is recovering after emergency surgery on Saturday for a brain hemorrhage.  A team spokesman said the procedure "had gone very well" but the 76-year old "needs a period of intensive care to optimize his recovery".  Ferguson led Man United to 38 trophies during his 26 years in charge.

Thousands protested in Paris against France's President Emmanuel Macron, one year after he came into office.  Most complained Macron is looking more and more like a right winger, at least economically, with his anti-Labor "reforms" - the same sort of slashes at social spending that have screwed people over in Greece, The UK, Argentina, and pretty much everywhere else it was tried.  Police battled some protesters on the sidelines under the pretense of corralling violence.

Happy 200th birthday Karl Marx!  His home town of Trier, Germany unveiled a new bronze statue of the economist and philosopher.

Mining continues to be one of the most dangerous jobs.  An earthquake in southern Poland near the Czech border trapped seven miners in the Jastrzebie Coal Company mine; two have been rescued.  Separately, a methane gas explosion at a coal mine near Quetta, Pakistan killed 16 miners.

India's rape epidemic is getting worse, despite the government's focus on tackling the problem.  Police in Chatra, a village in eastern Jharkhand state, arrested 14 people for kidnapping, raping, and burning to death a teenage girl.  The mob returned to kidnap and kill the girl after her parents had reported the gang rape.  Since the gruesome, fatal gang rape of a Delhi medical student in 2012, reported rape cases have increased to more than 40,000 per year - and many more are believed to be going unreported.

NASA for the first time launched an interplanetary mission from the US West Coast, launching the InSight probe from Vandenburg Air Force Base to Mars to investigate earthquakes.  Marsquakes.  Seismic activity.  Whatever.
