Russia has detained two men in the murder of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, whose killing on a bridge near the Kremlin shocked the nation. The men, from the Caucuses region, have not been charged yet and the head of Russia’s FSB has not discussed any motive. Before he was assassinated, Nemtsov said he was afraid the Kremlin would kill him because of his opposition to Russia’s involvement in the civil war in Ukraine.
Suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers attacked five places in Maiduguri, Nigeria, killing at least 54 people and injuring 143 more. The blasts were timed over a period of four hours in locations ranging from the bustling Baga fish market where 18 died, to a crowded bus station. A fifth attack on a police checkpoint injured three. At least two of the explosions were set off by female suicide bombers; one, by a teenage boy.
In Selma, Alabama, it’s the 50th Anniversary of “Bloody Sunday”, a landmark event in the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1965, African American marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge were beaten by police while demonstrating for voting rights. In 2015, America’s first black President Barack Obama will deliver an address from the site.
Thousands of women marched through the Chilean capital Santiago to demand reproductive rights. President Michelle Bachelet wants to repeal the draconian law leftover from the fascist dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet that bans abortions under all circumstances. But women have sought to terminate the pregnancies despite that prohibition, and marcher memorialized the women who died undergoing clandestine procedures.
A masked gunman burst into a restaurant in Mali’s capital Bamako and sprayed bullets from a Kalashnikov rifle. Five people were killed, including one each expatriate from France and Belgium. Two of the wounded were United Nations security advisors from Switzerland. Witnesses said the gunman might have had an accomplice.
Egypt carried out the first death sentence handed down in the overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi. Mahmoud Ramadan was hanged for his involvement in a notorious incident in which youths were thrown from a building in Alexandria, captured on horrific video. The subsequent military government sentenced hundreds of supporters of Morsi to death.
Islamic State has reportedly destroyed the ruins of a second ancient city, this one at Hatra, Iraq, a UNESCO world heritage site. Hatra was founded during the Parthian Empire over 2,000 years ago, and survived Rome’s attempted invasions. IS Militants have recently bulldozed ruins at the Assyrian city of Nimrud and destroyed museum artifacts in Mosul.
Chinese authorities have removed a documentary from websites, one that depicts the dangers and costs or uncontrolled pollution. It’s already been seen by more than 100 million viewers online. China’s environmental degradation is dominating the corrent session of the Nation People’s Congress, with newly-appointed environmental minister praising the film “Under the Dome”. Chen Jining says it should inspire improvements to air quality, but instead it’s making his fellow officials nervous.
