Canadian police are going through the background of 29-year old Faisal Hussain, now identified as the gunman who killed a 10-year old girl and an 18-year old woman in Toronto on Sunday night.  Hussain died in a gun battle with police, and 13 people were wounded before it was all over.  Investigators say he walked down the street in the Greektown neighborhood firing a handgun.  His family says he suffered from mental health issues.

The family of former Sydneysider Justine Ruszczyk Damond is suing the Minneapolis police department and several individuals.  An officer shot and killed Ms. Diamond after she tried to talk to officers she called earlier to report a crime.  The lawsuit claims the police violated Justine's civil rights.

Donald Trump thinks he has found a way to lash out at his critics who used to work in the US national security infrastructure: He is considering revoking the security clearances for Obama-era officials Michael Hayden, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, John Brennan, James Clapper, and Susan Rice.  Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said it's a "pretty petty thing to do".  Of course, if Trump revokes the traditional courtesy to ex-intelligence officials, there's nothing to stop future Democratic Party presidents from doing the same to his cadre.  Michael Hayden, former National Security Agency director, said since he doesn't go back to the old office for briefings, whatever Trump does "won't have any effect on what I say or write".

Trump's bellicose tweet on Monday morning threatening Iran was part of a carefully orchestrated escalation, according to administration sources who spoke to NBC News.  Before Trump warned Iran it could suffer "consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered" - in all caps - Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday had compared Iran's leader to the Mafia and urged Iranians to overthrow their government.  However, the strategy of putting pressure on Iran as it did with North Korea is being called dubious by many:  Iran is not diplomatically isolated like Pyongyang, sells its oil despite sanctions, and manufactures its own weapons.  Former US former Joint Special Operations Adm. William McRaven says, "This could be a disastrous misstep".

The death toll in Japan's record shattering heat wave has topped 44 lives lost.  The old tradition of throwing water on the road to cool the effects of the midday sun isn't going to cut it.

French military personnel headed north to Sweden to help fight more than 50 wildfires, which normally doesn't happen where there isn't global warming.  Meanwhile, forest fires raging across Greece have killed at least six people.  The government is seeking help from its European neighbors in battling the flames.

The Dominican Republic boasts some of the Caribbean's best beaches and waters, but a storm pushed the ocean's dirty secret right up to shore:  tons and tons of slimy, disgusting garbage.  Environmentalists have been warning about garbage patches in the oceans where plastic waste outnumbers fish, but it's usually far off shore and invisible to the average person.  Sixty tons of garbage have been collected on the beach since last week.

After throwing a fit for much of the spring and early summer, Italy is now agreeing to allow migrant rescue ships to dock.  That is, until the European Union works out a strategy on rescuing and distributing the refugees from Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia who came by the thousands over land and sea a few years ago.  Migration is way down from that epoch, but Italy's far right government had taken a hard line on migration and turned back some ships.  Now, Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said Italy's ports would remain open until a solution was reached to prevent "all rescued people from landing in one country".  That is expected in five weeks.

Two homeless men in Berlin are hospitalized with life threatening burns, and police are determining who doused them with flammable liquid and why.  Witnesses sprang into action after the attack, getting a fire extinguisher from a nearly kebob shop.  The victims are aged 47 and 62 years.
