Hello Australia! - Egyptian soldiers mistakenly kill tourists instead of terrorists - Borderless Europe is on hold - Et tu, Bronwyn?- And more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:
Egyptian security forces opened fire on a convoy of Mexican tourists, killing at least twelve people. It appears to be a case of mistaken identity - the soldiers were pursuing "terrorists" in the western desert near the Libyan border and opened fire on a quartet of 4x4 vehicles at an oasis. The victims are Egyptian and Mexican. The tourists were not supposed to be in the area, so investigators will try to determine why they were in an area with Islamic State terrorist activity, as well as why the military screwed up so badly.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto blasted Egypt on social media, tweeting: "Mexico condemns these acts against our citizens, and demands the government of Egypt conduct a thorough investigation of what happened."
The continent that tried to get rid of borders and checkpoints is putting them back. German security have performed their first passport checks on incoming train passengers, just hours after announcing it would temporarily reinstate border controls with Austria, blocking the path of refugees from the Middle East making their way from southeastern to northern Europe. It strands thousands in Austria and Hungary - the latter of which is highly unlikely to grant asylum to the refugees. Right-wing nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared them "economic migrants", denying the reality of war and food shortages in Syria and Iraq. Hungary will seal its southern border with Serbia on Tuesday.
But the refugees keep coming, some dying in the process. Children and infants were among 34 refugees who drowned in the straits between Turkey and the Greek island of Farmakonisi when their wooden boat sank. Another 68 were pulled from the sea and 29 managed to swim to the nearest beach.
Mount Aso in southwestern Japan erupted, sending smoke and ash into the air above Kyushu. Authorities declared a two kilometer exclusion zone around the mouth of the volcano, but it's in a national park with a bunch of other volcanic peak - thus there are no evacuations.
California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency after two fast-moving bush fires blackened more than 40,000 hectares north of San Francisco and in the Sierra Nevada foothills southeast of the state capital Sacramento. More than 200 homes and buildings have burned, thousands of people have been evacuated, and at least four firefighters are hurt. This is happening in a state pretty well dried out after years of drought.
Horror on the streets of New York City when a woman allegedly sicced her two vicious Pit Bull dogs on a stranger with whom she had just quarreled. Some witnesses recorded gruesome video (WARNING, view at your own discretion) while others tried to fight the dogs attacking 62-year old Francisco Bove, an artist who was there to look at a church which he had been hired to restore. Bove suffered horrific injuries, including torn ears, nerve damage, and cuts and lacerations all over. One of the brave helpers was also mauled. Authorities arrested and charged 55-year old Cynthia Oliver with five counts of assault and one count of reckless endangerment.
Amid speculation that disaffected Liberal Party MPs will take another shot at removing Tony Abbott as Prime Minister - and Tony's predictions that he will serve a full term - comes reports that one of his biggest supporters might be a "former" supporter. Former house speaker Bronwyn Bishop refused to expressly say if she still supported Abbott as PM. Bronwyn says, "I think I've already answered that question and I've said I think there's enough commentary around without me adding to anything," as quoted by Fairfax Media. The answer very easily could have been "Yes" or "No". But it wasn't. Ms. Bishop was removed from the speakership last month amid concerns over her incredibly ridiculous travel expenses.
