A speeding train ran down a group of religious pilgrims in Northeastern India, killing at least 37 people.  Angry survivors stormed the train, beat the driver, and set two other trains ablaze.

Police reinforcements had to be sent along with emergency rescue crews responding to the disaster at Dhamara Ghat station in Bihar state

The pilgrims were getting off of another train when the express came speeding through at 80 kilometers per hour on another track.

“Passengers got out of the train, came on the track and they were moving on that track. That is the time they got run over,” said Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar.

Officials say the train was not scheduled to stop at the station, but did come to a halt after striking the crowd.  But that’s when the angry mob assaulted the train driver to death and set the other rains on fire.  Railway personnel have run away and left the station completely unmanned.

More than 14,000 people, about 40 people a day, die on India's vast but decrepit railway network.  Sometimes they’re run down, other times they fall off of overcrowded trains.
