Indian musician Anoushka Shankar has followed in her father’s path bringing awareness of the Sitar and Indian Music to a global audience.  But she’s sharing a secret from her childhood to support growing awareness of violence against women.

In an Internet video the 31-year old musician said, "As a child I suffered sexual and emotional abuse for several years at the hands of a man my parents trusted implicitly." Shankar also revealed dealing with "groping, touching and verbal abuse" as a youth and as a young woman.

The video is part of the “One Billion Rising” movement started by American playwright and feminist Eve Ensler to end violence against women.  Shankar is appealing to viewers to support the campaign in memory of the 23-year old woman who was brutally raped and mortally wounded in India in December.  Five men are charged with rape, murder, kidnapping, robbery, and assault in that shocking case which made headlines around the world.
